May or may not be off topic so please read before locking.

Having seen at least two threads, dealing with the near riots at some locations due to Black Friday, get locked, I actually got to thinking that there maybe a not off topic side to this situation.

Lets say that you decide to partake of the insanity known as "Black Friday". You get up bright and early, either by yourself or maybe with your signifigent other and wander on down to Wally World or some other location at o' dark thirty to get that great deal. The doors open and the race is on. It the mass, heard-like feeding frenzy that follows you or your partner is knocked down and begins to be trampled. Or some nit-wit decides that getting the "Tickle Me Elmo" you have in your cart for himself is a good reason to attempt to kick your a$$.

What would you consider a justified response? And more importantly what do you think the police would consider a justified response?

Obviously in the second case give them the stupid toy. I love my kids and all, but I don't feel getting them a Christmas present is worth a fight. But then again what if the other person comes out swinging with out any lead-in or provocation? That seems to be a clear cut case of self defense.

It's the first scenario that was more the point of this thread. I mean think about it. If your standing there watching strangers run all over your wife, who's lying on the ground, what do you do? Wade into the pack like Bruce Lee swinging at anything that moves? Start hosing the crowd with pepper spray if you have it on you (Which may well make the situation worse)? Pull your CCW and pop a few into the ceiling (Not that I think that would help improve the situation much either)?

What do you feel would be justified? And what about the repercussions after the smoke clears?

Black Friday

Black Rifle for Black Friday.:neener:

Seriously, I don't think that you would be able to claim self-defense as you should never walk into a situation like that. It has been documented for years that this type of thing has been happening and getting worse.

The first course of action is always to diffuse the situation. If you are planning on going to the mental hospital you need to realize that the crazies will attack.

Stay home and pay the extra $30. Truthfully it will save you a lot of lawyer fees and being home for christmas rather than the pen is a lot better for the children.

FoxLabs make a luvly OC grenade that is perfect for these situations....................I dream of going to the malls on Black Friday and lobbing a few here and there.....................ahhhhhhh to dream!!:neener:

reasonable

You may (or may not) be legally able use reasonable means, including force, to protect your property. Unfortunately, items in your basket aren't yet yours are they?

I think if fisticuffs were exchanged in such a situation, absent some sort of gross misconduct on the part of the victim, the 'basket snatcher' is probably going to find him/herself uninvited by both store management and John & Joan Law.

I think this is way too close quarters for a handgun.

If they're that determined to have it, so be it.
That's why God invented stun guns

<oh come on, like you weren't thinking the same thing>

From a pure S&T standpoint, I'd say that the savings are not worth the potential for being involved in a riot / scuffle / legal situation.

Translation: stay home that day. Continue digesting the tryptophan.

There are deals after thanksgiving??? :p

Seriously though, I may as well have not known. I never partake in such madness. There's not a retail deal in the world that I would crave badly enough to go crawling over people.

I do not participate in this madness - aside from seeing it absolute idiocy to wait in line for hours to save what isn't much more than pocket change (at best) as a CHL holder I believe it's incumbent upon myself to avoid situations that have this kind of potential for trouble.

And if I did have a brain freeze and go early, I still would not get into a fight with one or more strangers over stuff I haven't paid for yet. I may yell a bit, but stuff that isn't mine isn't worth hurting someone or getting hurt over.
If your standing there watching strangers run all over your wife, who's lying on the ground, what do you do?
This will probably draw a negative response, but people who are trampling a loved one are putting that loved one in immediate danger of grave and grevious bodily harm - it's not a matter of getting "stuff" that's on sale. If necessary, I would use deadly force to protect that loved one.

I expect the legal repercussions would be unpleasant, but survival of my family would be Priority #1 - period.

I was working at the store on black friday morning...

there were so many people acting so crazy that it made me wish I was packing that day. I literally had to play the "mean cop", cuz people were acting totally crazy.

+1000000

the SAME stuff will be on sale 3 weeks before black friday, and 3 weeks AFTER black friday.

but stuff that isn't mine isn't worth hurting someone or getting hurt over.

Heck, even stuff that *IS* mine isn't worth hurting someone or getting hurt over.

Just avoid the whole thing. Stay home, watch tv, clean the guns, play football with the kids, mow your lawn, do dishes.

JJ (who went to work, and spent only 6$ on frozen custard all day long.
