Does anyone out there shoot exclusively black powder in CAS? I am getting back into shooting percussion revolvers and see that CAS might be fun. But can you do that with just cap and ball revolvers? I have one and I guess might need a couple more to get into cas. Don't really have a lot of desire to get into the long gun side of CAS. Any thoughts or recommendations?

Yes, you can shoot Cap&Ball handguns in the Frontier Class. The Colt 1860 Army is popular in that class. The 1858 Rem. and 51 Navy are also used.

Pulp, SASS#28319 here. My favorite sport. And I'm the World's Worst Cowboy Action Shooter.

Now to your question. Unfortunately, you have to have a rifle in pistol caliber, it can be a lever action or a pump, and you have to have a shotgun, 20, 16, 12 or 10. SXS, Win. '97 or clone, or Win. '87 or clone thereof.

There is a category for percussion competitors, called Frontiersman. BP or sub must be used in long guns as well as revolvers. SXS or '87, no '97's allowed. If a stage calls for a reload, you charge all 6 chambers, but only cap five. Before you fire the first shot from that revolver you cap the 6th nipple. I usually shoot Frontiersman category.

On the plus side, you should be able to pick up a used Rossi '92 for under $350.00 and a decent SXS for around the same price.

Excuse me "Pulp", but you are claiming my title as the "Worlds worst cowboy action shooter". Bad Hand SASS 24260

Hellgate SASS#3302 here shooting Frontiersman since 1993. Pulp summed it up. You will need 3 C&Bs. The 3rd one for full pistol (5 round) reloads and as a backup if one of your other two guns breaks. A full reload for suppository shooters means shuck out the empties and refill the chambers. For a Frontiersman it means you get to stash a 3rd fully charged but UNCAPPED gun at the place where the "reload" is to take place. You merely retrieve the gun, cap it and blam away. This is THE ONLY advantage the Frontiersman has over the other shooters for gaining time on them and it happens very rarely. I like a Colt for the "reloads" because the cappers get into the nipple cutouts easier than for the Remingtons but I tend to use Remmies for my main match guns. You can use subs in any of the guns. I use 777 in the 357 rifle only BP fuels the revolvers and the 12ga SXS.

I have reloaded .44-40 with Cleanshot/APP for many years. I started with a Rossi 92SRC/Puma carbine, one ASM-made Cimarron "New Model 'P'" SAA clone, and a Pietta 1860 Army .44 replica. Later I got a second, Uberti made "New Model 'P'" (ASM had been bought out by now defunct American Western Arms by that time), so all my guns would shoot .44-40. I'm thinking about going all "1860's" again (except for lacking a muzzle-loading shotgun), so I now have an ASM 3rd Model Dragoon, my 1860, my 1858 Starr DA (the local match I shoot at will let me use it in SA mode), a Uberti 1860 Henry (.44-40, of course), and a Lefever Nitro Special 12-gauge. I am currently working on restoring a Belgian side-lever 12-gauge to shooting condition (mainly needs a new stock and some lock repairs). I just bought 12 pounds of FFFg and 13 pounds of FFg KIK black powder, so now I can use the real deal. I also plan on using an original S&W Model 2 .32 Rimfire that was made in 1864, as soon as I replace the split spring on the cylinder bolt, and as soon as I get some re-loadable brass rimfire cases from Dixie Gun Works or H&C (just for 'style points'...:D).

It makes me laugh, seeing the "gamesters" with their light-loaded .38's and .32's, going "pop...plink...pop...plink". Then I touch off a full-house .44 BP load: "BOOOOMMM!!!...CLANG!!!!" Sure turns heads!!!:D

Oh yeah, there's another category called Frontier Cartridge, that is for the folks shooting BP or subs, but all the guns are cartridge.
I shoot it sometimes, use a .44-40 Ubert, and a Walker with an R&D cylinder in .45 Colt.

If you showed up with one cartridge revolver and one percussion, you'd have to shoot in FC.
