Crawdad1,

Unfortunately, no. Twain's books are one of the few "classics" from this time period commonly read. Modern references like from a Zane Grey, O Henry, or Louis L'Amor novel don't count.

The movie versions were all over the place
Example....eye patch on right eye in one version then on left eye in another version
Guns used were also a mixture of period and non period guns
This is from my copy of the book

One problem with contemporary accounts is the frequent use of the word “revolver” or "six-shooter", when the actual gun was what we now refer to as a “pepperbox”, i.e,, a multi-barrel revolving firearm.

One such gun is the pepperbox carried and used by Mormon elder Joseph Smith to defend himself when he was assassinated in the Carthage (Illinois) jail on June 27, 1844. The firearm is displayed in the Church History Museum of the Latter Day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Contemporary accounts reference the failure of several “barrels” to fire, confirming the nature of the “revolver” or “six-shooter” which Smith used.

True Grit was written as a work of fiction... in 1968.

Once again, folks have confused modern fantasy with historical reality.

"Both armed with revolving pistols" but only later in the passage do we see, "But three barrels of his pistol." And yet Samuel Colt described his revolver as a "revolving belt pistol." Someone could look at that passage and think, barrels? They must mean chambers. The way they threw around these terms is very confusing unless of course we can actually see the firearm he was using which is in most cases impossible.
