A self proclaimed "firearms expert" at our church recently informed me that carrying my new G 26 with Black Talon ammo is not legal. Is there any truth to this? I know they are no longer manufactured and I do have some concerns as to the age and reliability of the rounds, but it doesn't make sense to me that they would not be legal to carry.

Nothing unlawful about Black Talon. As to being a very effective round, it was OK at best. I'd get some Federal HST and sell the Black Talon to a collector.

Black Talons are just as legal as any other hollowpoint round. But they're out of production and allegedly don't work as well as modern HP ammo anyway. One of those products that the media gave a bad rap to. Collectors items, IMO. I have a full box of 20 .357 BT's in my collection, where they'll stay. And FWIW, Winchester Ranger SXT's are supposed to be the same thing with a different appearance and packaging.

I do still have a full box of 9mm and the box is in good shape so I may go with the Winchesters and keep the BT's. My local dealer has the Winchester rangers in the .40 cal. but not the 9mm. but I shouldn't have trouble finding the 9's and in the mean time I can stick to the Golden sabers or Hornadys I have. I'd heard the larger cal. BT's were worth something to collectors but thought the 9mm. were pretty common.

Unfortunately nobody recreated the excellent 180 grain .357 HP black talons. They're incredibly accurate out of my Speed Six, but I have only a few left.

"Experts" are a dime a dozen, and usually need a little Plumber's Putty to stop the drip.

Your guy is giving you bogus information. I'd avoid him. The Black talon is an old round and there is better stuff out there without the negative stigma that is attatched to the Black Talon loads.

Anytime someone states such an absolute legal statement, simply ask them to cite it in the law. When they can't (and they never can) tell them to shut up.

Somewhere in the bottom of one of my ammo cans I have 15 rounds of 9mm Black Talons. I think I'll pop them off next time I'm out.

Mythical "cop killer" bullets

Black Talons are perfectly legal to use
The Lubalox coating was to protect the rifling and did not give the bullet armor-piercing capabilities.
Nor does Teflon, molybdenum disulfide, or wax.
Winchester Ranger SXT (Supreme eXpansion Technology, or Same eXact Thing) are very similar with some small changes to enhance the reliability of expansion.
