Going to gunshow this weekend looking for one.I've seen the models you can buy with the extra .45 ACP cylinder but if I can't find one can I buy one direct from Ruger? What's the going price on .45 blackhawks?

I don't know if the same would be true of of the Blackhawk but I got a Super Single Six in exchange for doing some computer work for a guy but it only had the 22 magnum cylinder. I tried to buy the 22LR cylinder from Ruger but they said I had to send the gun in for the cylinder to be fitted to it.

I think the cost was going to be $45 when I called. Not sure if that included return shipping.

I bought my .45 Blackhawk with Colt and ACP cylinders for $360.00. This was special ordered from Galyan's. The highest price I found was $425. It is blued. I am willing to bet that the extra cylinder will end up costing you about $100 in the end, so you will be better off finding a gun with both in the first place.

Prepare to spend another $25 a cylinder to have the cylinder throat reamed out to the proper 0.4525". It is well worth the money. I have not gotten a belt mountain base pin or the Wolff extra strength latch, but that is my next step. Slap on some gunfighter grips and I think she will be done!

unfortunately no. ruger wont sell you a cylinder or barrel of any kind. i has tried. they will only replace anything lost or damaged so unless the serial number shows it was shipped with a 45 acp cylinder, they wont fit one.

Ruger WILL fit a .45acp cylinder for you. You DO have to ship them the gun, When you get it back you will have a cylinder that will properly fit your gun and it will be numbered to match.

if that is true. please let us know. i talked to several people at ruger just a couple of months ago about fitting a 44-40 cylinder to my 44 mag. my answer above is what i was told despite a persistant 20 minute phone call.

Targetshootr, you may find that's because of the different calibers involved in .44-40 (.427) and .44 Magnum (.429), as well as the wildly different pressures of the rounds. Ruger may have decided that they simply don't want to have that sort of legal liability.

i think i will call them again next week to clarify. maybe they will fit a spare cylinder if you ship them the gun which is not something i will do when most every other gun maker will sell barrels and cylinders through brownells. and after you pay $30 shipping each way youre probably looking at $150. i managed to find a 44-40 cylinder from numrich for around $65 and sometimes the custom gunsmiths have spares also. and of course the auction sites.

I guess Ruger *used to make Blackhawks in .45LC though. A friend of mine has one that he reloads for. It's a very pleasant shooting revolver. Probably about a 5.5 or 6 inch barrel. I was hitting a empty "Coleman Gas" can which someone had nailed to a fence post about 75 feet away. He even built a shoulder holster for it. (He's a BIG guy.) I remember asking him why he didn't get one in .44 mag. His reply was, "If I ever have to use this pistol for defense, .45LC will be better. A .44 mag at close range will zip right through a man without causing all *that much damage". Naturally, I didn't believe him. However, two weeks later, incredibly ~a man was shot through the chest at a sleezy bar near Churchill Downs and indeed, the bullet went through his chest without doing much damage. (He proceeded to beat the shooter to death.) It must have been a FMJ that didn't hit anything vital. That's the only way I can explain it. My friend just said, "See".<shrug>

Ruger still makes the Blackhawk in .45Colt. Two finishes in three barrel lengths even.
Thay also still make it as a convertible with an extra .45acp cylinder.

Re: the .44 magnum: It would have to have been a FMJ (does anyone make a .44m fmj?) since some of the soft point .44magnum hunting loads as well as the hard cast Buffalo Bore type loads would have no problem drilling right through a man.

I have a Blackhawk convertible in .45 Colt/.45 ACP and one in .357/9mm.
I don't think they are by any means rare. It is a currently cataloged item.
Why not just order one from your dealer ?

clin4580,
To answer your original question, the suggested retail price on a Blued .45 Blackhawk Convertable is $489.00.

Check online with Davidson's Gallery Of Guns to see what they're going for at your local dealers.

As I said before bought a .45 convertable about 6 months ago for $363 brand new. They are not rare, they are still made.

Hrmm... $363 brand new with both cylinders seems like a pretty good price... I think I paid $329 for my Blackhawk with just the 45 Colt cylinder. I probably would have popped the extra for the convertible.

Edit... and since there's no pictures on this thread yet:

Nice!

That's a nice looking gun. I have the 5.5" barrel, but would love to get a 4 5/8" as well. Is that the Blackhawk you just picked up?

Oops. The original poster, clin4580, and you cratz2 both began with C so I mixed the two of you up.

Yeah the price difference was about the same when I looked. Like $325 for the .45 colt and $40 more for the extra cylinder.

I got the 7 1/2" 45 Convertible about 10 years ago, and it was great, but a little much to carry conveniently. I traded for the 4 5/8" 45 Convertible and it was just as good. A friend recently ordered the 5 1/2" Convertible from a dealer and got it in about 2 weeks IIRC. They are still available, and they are great guns. You can shoot hot LC loads, standard loads, cowboy loads, and a full range of 45 ACP loads. I wish I had kept the 7 1/2". What a pair that would have been!
