I really want a .45 Blackhawk convertible in stainless, but it doesn't appear ruger makes such a thing. Am I right? In that case, can I buy a .45 colt gun and send it back to ruger to have a .45ACP cylinder fit? Is there anything special about the convertible blackhawk other than the extra cylinder? Anybody have a clue how much that would cost?

There are some stainless convertibles available, they are a special run for the distributor Acusport and are in the 5.5" Bisley configuration.

There is some confusion on whether Ruger will fit a stainless cylinder, the answer is "sometimes yes, sometimes no", it depends on who answers the phone, I know people who've gotten them and people who've been turned down.

There is no difference in the Blackhawk convertible versus the standard Blackhawk other than the extra cylinder.

I have a stainless Blackhawk in .357 that I wanted a 9mm cylinder for so I simply found a blued one online and fitted it myself and it works perfectly. There aren't as many .45acp cylinders out there but they can be found.

It's been some time since I had my blued BH convertible, but it had both a painted Al ejector tube and gripframe, where the SS BH is all SS.

I have a sst blackhawk 45 colt. I tried a blue 45 acp cylinder that a friend
had and it worked just fine so I bought it. I think it shoots better with this cylinder than the 45 colt cylinder. I would look at gunshows for a blue cylinder. the looks don't bother me with a blue cylinder in a sst revolver but if it would bother you just get the bluing buffed off. I don't happen to think that Rugers are fitted that closely so I don't think that would be a problem. if it was S & W that would probably be a different story

I have sent back several stainless .45 Colt NMBHs and had both 5 ½” barrels and .45 ACP cylinders fitted. They work beautifully. Recently, I had a stainless .357 fitted with a new barrel and 9mm cylinder. I haven’t been able to test it enough to know how good it will be, but the throats of both the .357 cylinder and 9mm cylinder are .358”, so there is hope.

Hmmm...how hard is it to fit the cylinder yourself? I think a blued cylinder would be just fine...maybe have it nickel plated.

When I sold my blue 45 conv., I kept the acp cyl..

It fit and timed in my 51/2 SS BlkH. Also, the gap was about.005.
But, it would not even fit in the "frame window" of my 71/2 SS BlkH.

It shoots accurately.

Sometimes a cylinder will just drop in and sometimes it needs to be fitted. If it's oversized you simply file down the ring of steel at the face of the cylinder until it fits, if it's undersized you really can't do much unless you weld up the cylinder and fit it but then you'd have to set back the barrel to headspace properly.

If it was me, I'd buy a cylinder, if it fits great, you're done. If it's oversized you can file it down or sell it and buy another until you get one that fits. If it's undersized, I'd just sell it and buy another. Odds are good that you'll get exactly what you paid for a cylinder, usually 50-60 bucks, if you choose to sell it.

Gunbroker.com or Auctionarms.com try the Ruger forum or even put in a plug on THR sales forums.

Does anybody sell new cylinders? I looked at e-gunparts.com and they seem to sell every other cylinder BUT the 45ACP...:banghead: Would Ruger sell me one without sending the gun in?

Ruger will not under any circumstance send you a cylinder. Give them a call and see how much it'll be to install one for you, it'll be pretty chap but you'll have to pay shipping. You could also pick up a used 9mm cylinder as they are plentiful and have it rechambered to .45acp by a local smith.
