I have a Ruger Blackhawk that I really like. It is the short barreled version in 45 Long Colt w/ 45 acp cylinder. Now I really like this gun as a combination knock around, truck, tacklebox kind of gun and shoot it quite frequently. The only thing that keeps me from loving this gun is that god-awful ugly front sight. Can't help it guys, too me its just fugly. Not fugly enough for me not to appreciate the handiness of this gun, but it just gets on my last nerve. So in my infinite wisdom I have decided that I want to replace the front sight with and old fashion half moon configuration sight to give it a much need, in my opinion, old school look. I have the knowledge and lathe to produce what I need, but haven't decided on how to approach it. I could repoduce the bottom 2/3 thirds of the sight and mill a half moon on the top, or do the two thirds and slot it for a pre formed half moon key. Any thoughts, suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd mill the existing base for a sight insert of your choosing.

I don't know if your ramp is screwed or silver soldered on?
But either way, you already have a base, so why reinvent the wheel and make another one.

Or better yet, go this route.
Heck, you could have a whole pocket full of sight blades to match your mood each day!

Thanks for the link. I'm going for an oldschool look like something relatively comprable to a 1917 S&W. That much height on a moon key might look ridiculous, so i'll probably play around with the idea of mounting something on the existing sight. Many thanks for you advice

Just so you know, a half-moon front sight will not help your accuracy any a tall in bright sunlight.

That Baughman style ramp front sight on the adjustable sighted Rugers is there for a very good reason.
