Does anyone here have any experience with these OWB holsters from Blackhawk leather? If so does it hold the gun close to the body and conceal well? Thanks
Yes and yes.
You need a good belt to secure it tightly to your side.
Not much larger than the J Frame itself.
Uses elastic to provide side compression to keep the revolver secure.
Made of Italian leather.
I seldom OWB, when I do I use the BH.
You may wish to consider a Kydex synthetic also diminutive with locking feature. I don't know if they hug your side as well as the BH.
There are many J Frame Holsters and the BH is one of the most economical I have found.
I posted pictures of me wearing one in use on the 340 thread.
In FL you will need a nice loose shirt, unless the T-Shirt is very loose you might see "something".
IWB will probably be your best bet if you really want to get covert beyond pocket carry.
just got one and I gotta say its my favorite OWB holster, its small, holds the gun well and its well made. I had my Blackhawk dealer order it for me, and per my recodmention, they will be stocking them now
DAdams I've used a pancake style leather holster for my j-frames in the past and they seemed to conceal well, never really got any heavy printing. My T-shirts tend to be a bit loose fitting usually a size bigger than I normally wear,do you think the blackhawk is the holster for me? I really like its design and find OWB to be more comfortable than IWB as a general rule.
Me too, a nice Italian Leather tan, brown or deep cordovan would be snazzy.
Megatron-
If you have used pancake and want something different in an OWB based on the dress style you describe and don't care for IWB I think you would like this. I know looking at the pictures that it is difficult to tell what is going on with its layout and construction.
It is well made and is a molded fit for a 340/J Frame and is perfect. The trigger and guard are fully covered. The fit is snug, you could run flat out and the revolver wouldn't come out. The barrel end is completely closed The cut is such that a Crimson Trace 405 grip fits well with no clearance issues.
Thanks Landpimp,
It is much easier picking out guns than holsters. So far my best for the J frame is a Mika pocket but I don't like to give up the pocket real estate.
The best price I have found for the BH Speed Classic is Optics Planet. Also looking at Tucker-Leather J frame cover-up IWB with adjustable cant and height. My Texas CHL is in the mail (5+ months and 3 emails to Congressman to "speed" up). Soon this will be the real deal, so the right Holster has gotten important. I found for my SA-XD9 Service Model a Raven Phantom Kydex that works great and actually conceals! But I really want the J frame 442 for my EDC. My wife has a 442 too. On mine I put some S&W rosewood checkered grips that look classy old-school and I enjoy the feel shooting. For her it took Houge Monogrip for comfort and pain relief.
Thanks again for the info.
Dave - do you find reholstering a problem with the BH? I have one myself and had a problem once when the M&P 340 dropped in the drink (small stream) when I was in the woods. I figured that I didn't have it properly secured. As I spend time outdoors and around water, I bought a Desantis with a thumb break. However, I went to use the BH the other day at the range, performing some slow draws from concealment and found that the reholstering was not crisp. It's a beautiful holster and I intend to use it more now that the weather is cooling off in NY, that is if the bugs get worked out.
geek, I most often carry front right pocket, use a Sparks or PCS holster, depending on which Charharts I am wearing
But have really been enjoying the BH even with shorts and a light shirt it goes unnoticed. Also alot easier to run with the gun on the belt. But I do miss the warm fuzzy feeling on putting my hand in my pocket and having no one notice I have a gun ready to go
Next Blackhawk order we place will have the speed clasic included, I got one to try it, then said its an item needed to be stocked
I just ordered the speed classic from Optics Planet based on this forum.
A week in to having CHL and I have these holsters for a S&W 442
Simply Rugged OWB/IWB
Mika Pocket Round Cut (love love love)
Mika Pocket Square cut (on order)
Highnoon AIWB (Mr. Softy)
BH Speed Classic (on order)
1.5 TheBeltMan gun belt to carry on
Anyway I use Gold Dot 135 P+ SB and BB 158 " FBI Load"
I keep thinking about carrrying my XD9-service or even getting another 9mm that is smaller but I can't see really carrying it everyday but I can the 442. To make the 442 "mine" I added Rosewood checkered S&W logo grips that look so good.
P.S. I carry a speed strip in a Simply Rugged belt holder that fits snug and hides great.
Any input y'all have about CCW other than snuuby or is the snubby the best? My wife carries her 442 in the car and is happy forever with one gun. I can't help but wanting more.
j frame airweights IMOP are the perfect ALWAYS gun. I may back mine up with something else(HK, 19 snub ect which I carry in my bag) but that darn 340(or other J's) goes everyplace with me......including a dip into the Puget Sound
Yes, and the snub taken to the nirvana level...M&P 340. 13.3 ounces, Tritium XS Big Dot sight, DLC finish, .357 capable (if so inclined), and a lanyard pin.
I just received the Speed Classic. First impression is high quality and minimalist and smart design. However, it does not conceal any better than my pancake style. So I like the look and the gun fits the leather molded form very well.
I wonder at what position others wear this 3:30....?
