I’m shooting some lower power loads in 1911 45 and noticed that out of 100 shots, I had 2 that sent a little spray of dust, grit (powder)? Back towards my face.

Gun issue or a reloading issue?

I have been reading on the subject and that makes the most sense.

The cases are a sooty mess, but I’m running HP38 and it’s bad anyway.

I guess this is the price you pay for mousefart loads.

switch to bullseye if you can. I have run 38 special down in the 400 fps range with no problems with this powder (caution: don't try this at home as you probably will stick a bullet in the barrel).

luck,

If you are getting soot on case and getting powder in face with mouse fart loads, your charges are too low to properly seal case mouth/neck with chamber and high pressure gas is pushing unburnt powder granules back.

Incrementally increase your powder charge until powder granule to face stops.

When I was loading 230 gr X-Treme plated RN (sized .451") and W231/HP-38 at 1.240" referencing lead load data, I got unburnt powder granule to face out of Sig 1911 until charge was over 5.0 gr. Accuracy improved with 5.1 and 5.2 gr so I kept 5.2 gr for lighter target load.

1911 45 ... mousefart loads
My favorite 45ACP mouse fart load is 200 gr LSWC with 4.0 gr of Promo (Referencing Red Dot load data per Alliant). Very accurate 2" groups at 25 yards and no unburnt powder to face.

Yep. Too light a load and brass is not expanding to seal the chamber. I have experienced it with rifles when trying to fire form without using too much powder. Doesn't work.
For you, use mid range reloading data for comfortable recoil and OK accuracy.

Thanks Murf

I’m not ready to make a switch on powder. I just switched over to HP38 from Tightgroup.

Yep, At 2 cases per 100 it doesn't sound like much of a problem.

Trying shooting those loads through a suppressor. The added back pressure sends back a surprising amount of debris. Glass are a must, but then again they always are when shooting.

You are #39. I would suggest using something between #7 and #18. My preferred would be bullseye, 700x, or red dot. Flake shotgun powders do better at low pressure than ball powders

Can’t say I did have an issue with TG, but I didn’t do any experimenting. I ran around 1000 rounds of 230 FMJ with TG without issue.

I was just using the last of my stores before I started load workups with HP38.

My LGS has other options, but HP38 seemed like a good one stop shop for 380,9,45. I’m due to restock soon.
