Used to use Blue Dot in my .41 Mag. Liked it. Showed no problems. Then Alliant said to stop. Now looking at the reloading data for Blue Dot they list loads in .357, .44 mag, 10 mm, and 40 S& W.

So why in the world would Blue Dot have problems in .41 Mag that do not show up in these other calibers?

Hi...
I used Blue Dot in my .41Magnums for years until the recommendation to stop using it for that caliber was issued.
Never had any problems but decided to heed their warning and switched to Unique and 2400 for loading my .41Magnum revolvers.

I assume they must have experienced pressure spikes in their testing in .41Magnum revolvers
I still use Blue Dot in my .357Magnum revolvers with excellent results.

I also used a lot of Blue Dot back in the day, in both a 4" and an 8-3/8" model 57, no problems. Since the warning, I've switched to Accurate #7. Doesn't fill the case as well, but shoots every bit as good.

I have to admit I don't understand the warnings. 41 mag...and 125 gr 357....which might be even more bizarre. Headscratcher.

I also used to use BD for the .41. Was fast enough for hunting loads, and could be reduced somewhat for cast bullets. I was very happy with it. Only discontinued due to the Alliant warning. No idea what the problem was.

Been discussed for years over and over. Why exactly it does not " Who knows. Blue Dot is not a powder worth using with all the other available choices
Your preference may vary.,

At Alliant Powder, we take safety seriously. That’s why we periodically test our products in different situations to be sure our use recommendations stay current. Check here for any safety notes or recall information. Stay safe and keep accurate.

Alliant Powder periodically reviews and tests their published reloading data to verify that our recommended recipes have not changed over time.

During the latest review Alliant Powder discovered that Alliant Powder's Blue Dot® should not be used in the following applications:

  • Blue Dot® should NOT be used in the 357 Magnum load using the 125 grain projectile (Blue Dot® recipes with heavier bullet weights as specified in Alliant Powders Reloading Guide are acceptable for use).
  • Blue Dot® should NOT be used in the 41 Magnum cartridge (all bullet weights).
Use of Blue Dot® in the above cases may cause a high pressure situation that could cause property damage and serious personal injury.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

I have loaded BlueDot in the .41 back in the day, I didn't think it was that good of a powder to start with and discontinued it even before the warning came out, but in any event, the warning is good enough for me. Manufacturers are not in the habit of telling people to NOT use their product, if Alliant pitched the warning, there must be a reason for it.

As another poster mentioned... Unique will get you almost there, and 2400 takes over from that point.

I really like BD in these calibers and also 460S&W. But if the manufacturer indicates to not use it in my calibers, I'd be sure to heed the info. But it is curious why the issue only occurs in these few exceptions.
