All the semi's here except one have a hammer with a spur on them. Wandering the net looking at pictures I saw what others had done to their S&W 3'rd gen without a spur hammer. I liked so I found a parts supplier with a couple in stock. Ordered one and the hammer arrived.

Curious how others feel with a bobbed/spurless hammer opposed to those with a spur to cock them into SA mode?

I was just playing with a Smith 3rd Gen in DA/SA with the bobbed hammer. Obviously it had and needs a decocker to operate properly. But I can see the usefulness in a compact or midsized pistol to have a bobbed hammer with the decocker.

I still prefer to be able to grab the hammer since I don't carry a hammered gun.

I have a few DAO pistols with hammers - LC9 and LCP - without spurs, but I don't really like to play with DAO exposed hammer guns. So other than the smaller framed internal guns, either my pistols are DA/SA, SA, or strikers - so if they have a hammer, said hammer has a spur.

Frankly, I'm not even a huge lover of DAO revolvers, as much of a revolver fan as I am. I like to spend time with my defensive firearms, so I spend a lot of time at the range with them, where having access to an SA option is very nice. I like the 638 over the 642, although I own both. I don't really care for manual safeties on my defensive pistols, as I prefer to have as few manipulative functions between "oh schitt" and "bang" as possible. So I prefer a DA/SA or striker gun for my carry applications.

I had a Sig DAK, and have several DAO revolvers, but I really just don't love DAO's. I don't love snagging the hammer on my DA/SA revolvers when carrying, never have a problem with DA/SA pistols, or SA pistols, but I'd rather have a shrouded hammer, or at least a knurled or checkered hammer "head" to let me cock it when so desired than to have a pure DAO. I did a custom SP101 with a 638 style hammer (no shrouds, obviously) years ago, it looks like a DAO SP101, but remains to be a DA/SA - I really like that revolver, and I'm planning to do one of my Kodiak Backpacker Redhawks with the same hammer.

Appreciate the comments. This is a range only toy so for most intents it is in SA mode. The dry fire practice times the lack of a hammer has been a hindrance. The hammer is here so I'll see how I like it.

Varminator, any pics of your custom SP 101 hammer?

I didn't vote because I sometimes like a combination of both.

One is the S&W Body Guard Model 638.

Another is a S&W 1917 .45 ACP revolver that had been customized before I owned it.
The barrel was 3 1/2", hot re-blue, with stag grips.
Hammer was mostly bobbed, but had a "V" notch (side view) to allow SA by partial cocking via a small pull on the trigger, and final full cock with the right thumbnail. It worked after much practice.
Really !!!

I'd seen multiple threads on the S&W 3'rd as well as bobbed hammers on their 59XX series too. I don't object to the dry fire practice in DA mode though sometimes I don't want to rack the slide or stick my thumb in to cock the hammer. SA practice was tedious. This was a pretty easy swap and done in about 20 minutes. I like it so far.

The revolvers have had the hammer spurs shortened like this one:
