Body Armor on airplanes

Anyone know the legalities of kevlar (no metal) in the terminal? on the flight?I know, not convenient nor comfortable, but is it allowed?Anyone know for sure?C-

Good question!

I'm not aware (for whatever that's worth) of any law against it, so long as you're not engaging in various high end felonies, however, I've been reading that the FBI has a policy that interprets the wearing of body armor as "just cause" to suspect something illegal is going on, and therefore they can detain you, search you, torture your poodle, etc etc etc.

I dunno. It's a tough call. Armor is tough to explain if it's discovered, not that it should be.

Mine's got a metal trauma plate in it, and I damn near walked through a metal detector with it once. Ended up having to do a discrete U turn, and drop the plate off in my car.

If you're just wearing a plain Kevlar vest it shouldn't set off the metal detector. Just make sure all the metal is off of you, walk on through, and feel safe in knowing that you have a tiny edge over non-armored passengers.

I'd bet that if you showed up at the airport and tried to go through security wearing a ballistic vest, you would probably miss your flight. While not against any known laws, they would still detain you for a while to figure out why you want to wear one. If an arabic looking Secret Service agent WITH credentials scares the pilot and passengers, a bloke wearing a vest will give them a heart attack.

I don't really see the benefit of wearing a vest on a commercial airliner.

If the guy I saw who claimed to have spent the last half of 2002 teaching new Air Marshals to shoot really did spend the last half of 2002 teaching them to shoot, kevlar vests on planes aren't just for paranoids any more.

The plate is thin steel. The intention of that plate isn't to boost "bullet proofness", it's purpose is to give additional blunt trauma protection to the sternum, which is a very shallow bone.

Make sure you take a Fleets Enema before going through airport security if you plan on wearing a Kevlar vest.

It will make the body cavity search by the FBI a little less unpleasant.

I gotta agree with Kevlarman. How are they going to know you're even wearing a vest? Have they started doing pat-downs and strip searches of everyone now? I hadn't thought about wearing my vest on a plane, but I refuse to fly anyway due to the airport "security" nonsense.
