Bolt action .22 fires itself

This post may not give enough info for you guys to help me, and I apologize in advance for the lack of details.

My father has an older Mossberg bolt action .22, magazine fed, which fires when you try to close the bolt. If you put the safety on first though, it won't fire but has a hair trigger.. I mean if you look at it funny it will fire.

I'd like to try to fix it for him next time I visit him, but I wasn't sure where to even start, and since he lives about 1,100 miles away I am unable to get pictures.

I can disassemble, clean and reassemble firearms pretty good, but I haven't learned much more than that yet, so any help is much appreciated..

Without even knowing which model Mossberg it is?
Could be a lot of things.

I'd look for:
* Dried grease & oil binding up the trigger or sear and preventing a comple return.

* Broken or weak trigger sear spring.
Test by pushing forward on the trigger with it cocked and see if it moves further forward.

* Some duffis stoned the sear or cocking peice and there is little to no sear engagement.
New parts would need to be installed.

*Trigger rubbing inside the stock on the wood.
Releive the wood that is in the way.

* Barreled action is loose in the stock & moving. (see above)
Tighten the screws and look for wood rubbing again.

Well looking at this site it looks the most like the model 45B, but it doesn't have a tubular magazine, nor does it have the finger grooves in the stock. The safety lever looks right though. I bet it's actually the model 44. His has a scope mounted so the rear sight was throwing me off in the pictures I found..

I'd almost guarantee that the trigger/sear has been modified with a file or simply worn away. Probably about $10-15 in spare parts to replace.

Have you had it apart yet, if not do so it may have a adjustable trigger. I have a Western Field 48A built by Mossberg that was suppose to look like this.(the first pic.)but ended up looking like this.(the second pic.)

Unfortunately it may be a while before I update this, but I'll let you guys know whenever I do get a chance to take it apart!
