I like my Savage .22, but it's kind of well, basic.
I'd like to spend $500 or less on a .22 bolt action repeater with a really substantial barrel, stock and action.
Does anyone make a "hefty" .22 boltie whose action feels perhaps a bit more centerfire-like?
Any recommendations?

I'd go with a CZ 452 IMO they're a lot of gun for the money also the fit and finish is excellent.

CZ 452, everyone that shoots my 452 Lux comments that it feels like handling a center fire bolt. Fit and finish are flawless.

++ on the CZ 452.
I bought a 452 Trainer for $399 2 months ago, the place had 452 Heavy barrel American stocked rifles for $419 and new 455 Americans for $429 on sale.

I bought my dad a CZ 452 Ultra Lux for $445 7 months ago...the gunshop I bought it from is selling them for $435 now...

As for your experience with CZ versus Savage...well mine is the opposite, but the OP has already said he has a Savage, and wants something different, so.............

Yes, for a centerfire feel - Anschutz 54 action or Cooper 57M action. Only problem, not in $500 range.

Save a little longer and get the King...Anschutz 54. You won't be sorry.....and you can quit trading up until you end up with an Annie anyway.

so you want a .22 that when you pick up and shoulder it, it feels more like a center fire rifle? cz 452 series for the win:cool: should consider the fs series as they have classic lines and unique for a .22 lr rifle

I have the CZ452 and thinks it is great. Good trigger right out of the box. I also like the Ruger but it will need a trigger job. I am considering the Ruger right now as I have a M77 MKII and the M77/22 would be a similar rifle for practice. Also the high cap mags might be fun.

I'll stick with my almost, if not 100 year old Winchester Model 72. Bolt Action, tube magazine, Shoots shorts, longs and L.R.'s. Iron sites and very accurate.
Chrtistmas present from my late parents when I was 13 I'm 58 now. I bet my Pop didn't spend more than $20 for it from the Pawn shop he purchased it from, in mid 1960's.

The CZ 452 Training Rifle I had :banghead: could shoot the whisker off a gnat. :) I don't know what it costs now, but I paid $229 for it in 2002. It has the best iron sights (short of an aperture sight) of any rifle I've seen; a scope is almost superfluous, only necessary to help you see the target. If you do scope this one, you will need high rings and a scope with a small objective lens, so as not to interfere with the tall rear sight. The rear sight, BTW, can slide up or down a ramp marked for various ranges, and it will it to point of aim at all of them. It has the heft of a full sized centerfire rifle, and no plastic (although the trigger guard is a stamping) anywhere except the butt plate. My only criticism of it is the counterintuitive, backwards-operating safety which requires completely breaking your shooting hand grip to operate.

For a repeater I'll just repeat what most have said above. Get a CZ 452 or 453. I have the varmit configuration and love it. The Kimber 82G from CMP is a great deal at 400 bucks. Have not heard of any rust except minor amounts in the bolt but easily cleaned up. Its a range type firearm, too heavy for carrying around and is single shot.

Don't know if you were directing any of that toward me since you didn't say but maybe you will see it if I post it again. "My area". And you didn't find a .22 LR. Both are .22 magnums.

Oops -- I had my threads mixed up. I had been reading one where the OP was asking about magnums. It might have been on another forum even. Anyway ...

For a .22LR, Bud's still has the 452 full-stock models, and that's what I'd recommend. He already has a Savage. As far as Kimber, unless he gets an 82 from CMP, he's going to break his $500 budget, and IMO the 82 is more of a dedicated target rifle than an all-around rifle. If that's what he wants, fine, but he doesn't say that in his original message.

Sorry for the mix-up.

I know it is above your price range, but the Ruger 77/22 is a great rifle. I've had mine for over 20 years and it is a great shooting gun with many characteristics of a full size centerfire rifle. If you could find a good used one in your price range you couldn't go wrong.
