Bolt action 30-06Bolt came out "Updated"

I watched my friends house for a couple of weeks and he tried to offer me money and i declined but he game me a Remington model 721 30-06.Knowing that i couldnt resist a new gun.I took it out a while back and fired fine. Nice little gun..But today i pulled it out and the first think i did was open up the bolt to make sure there wasnt a round in the chamber ect..But the whole bolt came out.I have no idea what to do If i can figure it out i will have to take it to a gunsmith and have him check it out but im really tight on money rite now.The whole bolt just slides rite out like when you normally pull the bolt up then pull back to eject the shell it does that and feels good but it doesent stop it pulls out all the way.Im not fermilular with this bolt action type of gun.Is there a button or something i hit and didnt notice.I will not fire this untill it is fixed im just hoping anyone has any info. Thanks for your time.

Ps- i can take pics if needed

Not familiar at all with the 721, but with any bolt action, there should be a "release lever"-thing that allows the bolt to come all the way out of the receiver.

I'd just betcha that this gun is gunked up - really, a tech-term - & just needs a goodly cleaning.

Betcha the "release lever" is somehow in the "open it up" mode.

Been wrong mostly 90% anyway ;) ... just a shot in the dark.

Bought a bolt rifle a while back second-hand & the thing won't allow the bolt out unless with great persuassion ..... reverse is as easily seen.

Look in front of the trigger and you will find a small plunger. When you push up on this plunger, the bolt stop is rocked out of the way of the bolt and the bolt can be removed. The bolt stop is located at the right rear just inside the bolt raceway. I recently had trouble with my Remington 700 and perhaps my experience will help you. My bolt stop was sticking in the open position. I took a Q tip and some gun solvent and coated the top of the stop mechanism allowing solvent to run down inside the stop cutout. This freed up the device and I figure that oil and debri had made the part stick. Hope this helps.

certainly there is a release lever that is either stuck or not functioning properly. I'd say inspect it yourself to see if the problem can be easily fixed before taking it to a gunsmith.

This is almost always the result of a stuck bolt release, and that is almost always the result of gummed up oil or grease. If you can remove the barrel and action from the stock, spray a little gun cleaner on the area where the bolt release moves (easily seen without the stock). If this doesn't work, then the gunsmith might be the answer.

Yeah! (& no offense intended)

By a <$3 can of Gunk-Free (carbuerator cleaner), dismount your barreled action from the stock to prevent any wood damage & spray the heck out of your action parts, all the while working the action parts of your rifle.

Make sure the "cleaning goop" gets everywhere. Work all the moving parts to make sure the cleaning goop gets everywhere while under motion.

Just betcha that solves your problem.

If not, c'mon back.

The only lever "assuming its the release lever" is in the pic im attatching circled in blue.I noticed it doesnt feel to springy..What would be the best way for me to clean this ..shout I unscrew the scews next to the triger guard. Thanks for any suggestions guys..

Wow you guys all posted quick..Should i spray with cleaner just the release button or should i spray under where the bolt would be if it was on the gun ..IS carb cleaner really ok to use..I can buy some real gun cleaner tomorrow if needed.I do need some more ammo for this gun anyways..thanks guys

Yep that's in the right place to be the typical remington bolt release. therefore it most likely is the button in question.

the only other forms of bolt relase i personally have observed on Remington Bolt guns are a small springloaded nub at the rear of the left lug raceway on the M-600 learned to shoot bolt actions with, and i've also seen Remingtons where teh Trigger was the "release switch" if the bolt was lifted and pulled to teh rear then the trigger held back, the bolt could then be withdrawn.
i state the above information as a "just in case".

Odds are that if there is a little button inside the trigger group JUST forward of the trigger, and said button does not seem to interact with teh mag floorplate... that you have indeed found the bolt release. and if as you say this button seems to be sticky or just plain Stuck. then that is likely the trouble.

Chet,

yes, you will want to remove all the large screws from the floorplate/trigger guard area, then the action/trigger/barrel should pop right out of the stock. Carb cleaner should work just fine, break cleaner on the other hand is bad news.

After spraying with something like carb cleaner, before you reassemble the rifle be sure to spray the bolt and trigger group LIGHTLY with a gun oil and then wipe them down. Spray gun oil on a patch and rub the barrel and the receiver before reassembling...

Strong cleaners do their job, but they also remove all oil. The re-oiling prevents rust.

Tightening the screws: Bring them both down equally, to a "snug" condition. Then, add 1/2 to 1 turn to "tight", IIRC doing the rear screw first. (This is not a test of strength; they don't have to be Omigawd! for tight.)

Well i lubed ect and it still doesnt stay.I have attatched a pic and its not my model but these are the parts ..When i push the button by the trigger the bolt stop #4 in the picture moves but i dont see where on the main bolt assembly that it would catch ect to stop.Im not sure what to do next i dont mind tinkering around with it somemore but if i cant fix it i will take it to a gunsmith before i shoot for sure. The bolt assembly just slides in rite i dont need to match it up with any moving parts or anything do i ..Thanks guys

I now see how it should work..the other end of that bolt stop should be up "Oposite end of where the button under the trigger is connected" but when i put it togeter there is the spring on the one side where the lever connects to the button but the other side doesnt want to go upinside the gun all the way..I know that must make no sence..wonder why it wont work now was working when i got the gun..I dont see any other parts either

I appreciate all the help..It was the darn sheer pin that holds that little clip.It wasnt holding the pin the way it needs to be..Can you imagine the laugh the guy at the gun store would of got if i took it in..Thanks for the help guys i appreciate it..
