any of the budget bolt actions have a reputation for being more accurate than the others? mossberg 100 atr, savage axis, ect.

and given everything the same, is there any difference in accuracy between a 30-06 150 gr. and a .270 win. 130 gr.

im looking to shoot 300+ yards.

Id lean toward the Savage based on reputation alone. Savage is well known for making accurate out of the box guns that are a good value.

The rifle and quality of the barrel, bedding, is more important to accuracy than the choice of 270 Win or 30-06.

Both of these cartridges are capable of outstanding accuracy, half MOA if you tailor your loads.

I keep on seeing Savage rifles at the range that are exceptionally accurate for their price range.

I am partial to the M70, but that is a more expensive rifle.

On accuracy: If you intend to tune up a handload, you have better bullet selection with the 30-06 (however, I personally prefer 165's and 180's for the 06 for longer ranges).

That said, I have had outstanding accuracy with Nosler ballistic tips in 130 gr for the 270.

The 270 will be a lot easier on your shoulder.

As for rifle: I would look at a Ruger American and T/C Venture.

I'd be buying the Ruger American. You'll see more differences in individual rifles than you'll ever see between 270 or 30-06 as far as accuracy go.

Shoot what at 300+ yards. Targets, deer, larger game?

Most of the budget guns listed tend to be very light. I'd be looking at the short action equivalents such as 308, 7-08 etc. to help with recoil and still give good performance.

targets and maybe a couple hunts per year.

im looking at academy sports site. im left handed and i like the savage left bolt but i also like the cva break actions and that dead on scope mount. i didn't know .308 and 7-08 where less recoil. how much less? i shoot a lot of 12 ga buckshot and slugs and thats about the most recoil i care for.

30-06

I bought a ruger American in 30-06. I put a nikon buckmaster 3x9x40. I shoot sub MOA at both 100 and 200 yards with factory ammo. Currently reloading and working on loads for a buffalo trip next year. Best $250 I have ever spent. Are there better rifles? Of course. But the $1000-$1500 I saved equals 2-4 more guns for me!!!! Love mine.

If single shot would be ok you might want to look into one of these in .308 or .25-06

Either caliber I think would be good for deer. Not sure about Elk though...

As for bolt action, I like the Ruger M77, but it is more expensive.

You mention shooting "30-06 150 gr and a .270 win. 130 gr"

At 300 yards +, you are going to want to shoot a "heavy-for-caliber" bullet that will have a high BC. For .30-06 this would probably be 180gr and for .270 probably 150gr.

These heavy bullets won't have the same muzzel velocity as the lighter ones, but they do retain their velocity better over longer distance. So at some point that 180gr ought-six bullet will actually be traveling faster than the lighter bullet anyway.

For a general-purpose hunting and range rifle, pick the rifle that fits and feels best to you and chambered in .270, .308, or the .30-06. They'll all work just fine on most stuff.

At normal hunting ranges there is no difference in accuracy. At very long ranges the 30-06 will have an advantage. The 30-06 has better bullets and a long history of success in long range competition. If you go high B.C. in the .270 you run into twist rate and stability issues. It can be done they say, but hasn't been. Not an issue for hunting.

I chose an X7 over the RAR . I like it a lot, and it shoots. I also have a howa that it is a shooter.

At the entry level price point, the Ruger American is a much better rifle than the Savage Axis. Trigger on the Axis is crap.

My favorite budget bolt action will only be found on the used rack or through an on line source such as GunBroker.com. This is the Winchester model 670.

A friend of mine picked up a T/C Venture in 270 for a pretty good deal. First time out he put 3 shots on a license plate a 330 yards... I called it luck but the rifle obviously shoots well enough to hunt with

This is an excellent time of year to browse the used gun racks for a good bolt action rifle. You might even get one with a decent scope already on it.

I am left handed, so I've picked up a couple of older Savage 110Ls. The last one I bought about a year ago was a light weight .30-06 with an old steel Weaver Scope for $225. It couldn't have had more tan a box or 2 of shells through it. It is very accurate. I also stil have an early .243 that is a tack driver. I think I paid about the same price several years ago.

I have asked about a .204 in several varmint forums. Received overwhelming number of recommendations for CZ American (in my case, 527 Varmint).

Have not seen one CZ recommendation in this thread. Curious why?..

if you still find a Stevens 200 (Savage 10/110 without accutrigger) helluva tackdriver, replace stock, little trigger work and have a beautiful, low priced rifle, mine is in 7mm-08, put a Boyds walnut stock on it had a little gunsmith work. will shoot dime groups at 100 yards, one of my favorite hog rifles, I got lots of rifles, but this cheapo goes with me to the cow pastures and deer lease all the time.
