I've been searching for a bit and I've found a few suggestions such as the Marlin 981, but I haven't been able to find one anywhere.

I'd like a bolt-action, tube-fed .22lr; new or used. I prefer wood but I'm not opposed to synthetic stocks.

Suggestions?

If you are going to use iron sights, a Remington 34. If you plan on using a scope, a Remington 582. The Winchester 72 is nice as well, and none of them would be very expensive.

Any older Remington or Winchester will likely serve you well. Most have the tube under the barrel, but not all. I have a bolt action Winchester that I've owned for years. It has the tube through the stock.

I've had a marlin 881 since i was 12 (21 years). The rifle is still accurate and dependable, and will always hold a special spot in my collection, as it my "first".

And it is not tube fed. Win 72's have become $350-$400 rifles. Don't be shocked when you start looking.

Marlin has discontinued or renamed the 981. Both the new and the old might be hard to find right now. The new model is on the Marlin website.

Marlin made this model 81 under their name as well as Sears label J.C. Higgins, plus others. These are not expensive, about $100, a bit more for one that's been cared for.

I would probably go for a Marlin, myself.

They're called XT-22R (blued) and XT-22TSR (stainless) now. Look at the bottom of this page:

Apparently, the 22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle version is no longer factory available with a wood stock, but I bet the 22 Magnum stocks would fit.

Maybe an older one would even be a better buy. Do you live in an area where pawn shops also have guns? If so, just hit them one after another until you find one.
