Remington 700 ADL .243, brand new

I purchased a rifle today, and apparently somebody decided that it was too dangerous to shoot, so they put a lock on it. Now, I can't close the bolt all the way.

Everything worked okay at the store, but when I got it home and started to clean it, the bolt wouldn't close all of the way. It closes about 1/3 to 1/2 way and then won't close any further.

I have read and followed the instructions that came with the rifle, but I cannot get it to work at all. When I put the lock in "lock" the bolt won't close at all, and when it is off of "lock" it won't close all the way.

What gives!

Aren't those built in locks fantastic?

I hope you can get it worked out. It's not fun to have a firearm that's broken.

i've never run into this problem, but what i would do... unlock the bolt as much as it will go, then remove the bolt and disassemble the bolt. check the shroud (where the j-lock is) to see what's hanging up.

2nd option, and what i do to all my j-locks: call sinclair and get a lightweight shroud/firing pin assembly, and do away w/ the j-lock alltogether.

It's not getting hung up on the magazine follower, is it?

+1 ?? If so or to prevent, push down on mag follower with left fingers while closing bolt with right hand.

Good shooting and be safe.

Simple solution, it turns out, and that blasted super-safety device wasn't to blame. The clerk who installed the scope used a screw in the front base that was a smidge too long. The bolt was unable to be closed because it was hitting on that screw. I went back and got another screw.

As it turns out, I went ahead and took the bases off, and loctited the screws in, since they didn't at the store. So I guess it wasn't a total loss of time.

Thanks for your help.
