With the hot weather around again I have been relaxing and re-reading some of my favorite novels. These include "Janissaries" by Jerry Pournelle and "Lucifer's Hammer" by Pournelle and Larry Nivin. Also want to include the"Corps" series by W.E.B. Griffen.

Any other suggestions?

Wolf and Iron by Gordon Dickson is a good SHTF book
Enimies Foreign and Domestic was a great read too could put that puppy down.

If you want some SHTF stories that are free, you might wonder over to Frugal Squirrels site, quite a few aspiring authors there doing short to medium long stories. Some come close to our own Nightcrawler and Correia.

The Janissaries series holds a special place. Imagine using a knowledge of Earth history to take over another planet! Developing "modern"armies almost from scratch, teaching basic sanitation, tactics, and logistics to a primitive somewhat barbaric people. Great fun!!!

I just read " Into the Forest" - I really liked it alot even though it is -sort of- geared towards a womans point of view. The book is basically about 2 sisters that have to learn to 'make due' after a SHTF scenario. Lots of talk about living off the forest etc

"Dies the Fire" by Steve Stirling is pretty good.

"Earth Abides" by ? Stewart is a classic and good as well.

Hope you haven't missed out on Lights Out :)

Red Storm Rising from Clancy is a really great book,
a tad long, but still great. But its more geared towards war than civilian SHTF.

Hey, EFAD's sequel is out, you should get that one!
I cant wait for mine! :D

If you liked Janissaries and Lucifer's Hammer, you'll love "King David's Spaceship", also by Pournelle.

SHTF on a terrestrial scale: George R. Stewart, Earth Abides.

Probably not what you want, but SHTF on a galactic scale: Vernor Vinge, A Fire Upon the Deep.

"Patriots:Surviving the coming Collapse"
by John Wesley Rawles, a Army Intelligence officer.

Hard to find, but the best SHTF book I have read. Packed with some interesting info woven into the fictional storyline.

'1632' and following by Eric Flint. Same premise as Island in the Sea of Time/Dies the Fire, but Flint has turned his into a flipping cottage industry with four novels so far, a book of short stories, plus seven volumes and counting of fanfic.

One of Jerry Pournelle's projects is a new story on Tran.

The book The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham was pretty good and had some good survival concepts in it. Forget the movie; while it was OK for a movie it was very watered down.

Another vote for "Lights Out". Great read for sure. And, it was written by one of our own, and is in PDF format on the net.

I'll second S.M. Stirling, although the Dies the Fire series is pretty rough going for firearms enthusiasts. The Nantucket series, Island in the Sea of Time, Against the tide of years, and On the Oceans of Eternity, are very good ones. Conquistador is also pretty interesting.

Footfall by Niven and Pournelle

Aliens invade using superior technology, they just aren't that superior themselves. It's a good read, especially the Orion spacecraft which is nuclear bomb powered and steam steered.

Alas Babylon (Pat Frank) recently ripped off for a TV series (I can tell just from the previews).

On The Beach (Nevil Shute)

The White Plague (Frank Herbert) As good if not better than Lucifer's Hammer...

And an additional thumbs up for Earth Abides!

Movies (OBSCURE) "The World, The Flesh, And The Devil"

Peet (can ya' tell from the titles I'm an old phart?)

Forgot:
"The Stand" Stephen King (who I usually despise, but this IS science fiction)

"No Blade Of Grass" (John Christopher)

A Boy And His Dog (Short story or movie)

You need to read "lights out" I am almost done reading it. Here is a thread with a link by the author to the story.

It says it's a private page so I wanted to use the link he made public so I didn't mess with any copy write stuff:confused:

The author seems to have something against Remingtons (none are in the story but...Winchester, browning, and Mossberg are in almost every fight:neener: ) but other then that it is a great story.

Very minor spolier

I think he wrote it some time between the 94 ban and after because the author uses pre ban....and prices to match but after that the prices are reasonable and there is no mention of the ban. I really don't know though, it is just a guess.
