"I've always wondered what they substitute for all the time we spent shining our boots, especially before inspections."

They fill int he time with fun things like watching TV, Decorating the house, cleaning the house, making Sugar cookies, Indie 500, Rack sandwiches, and so many more fun activities. If you dont know what any of things are just ask your son when he gets home and he will explain.

To the OP Semper fi. and remember "One shot one kill" sounds alot like Porch chop on a grill when screamed at full blast. You find fun little ways to amuse yourself and get through the hard times. Keep your spirits high and remember it is all training and will prepare you for the fleet.

Stay motivated! That means don't ever give up. Do whatever it is you are doing as if it is the most important thing in the world at that time and do it the best you can. You will learn things that will serve you during your service in the fleet and for the rest of you life. I'm sure I'll think about you. Good luck.

Just some friendly advice from a sailor, Your joining The Marines , don't ever forget what that uniform and all it's components represent . carry your self with dignity , and stay focused. I've learned rather quickly that a good Marine can be a GREAT thing. Welcome to the Fleet !

STAY MOTIVATED RECRUIT, STAY MOTIVATED!!!
I heard that a lot and will pass it on to you. I went to bootcamp with one goal. Not to stand out. I was so successful my Senior Drill Instructor did not know who I was during our Final Inspection. Well that is fine and dandy but if you want to achieve great success you must stand out! During the next twelve years of my career I realized two types of Marines stand out. Outstanding Marines and less than outstanding Marines. It will be obvious and those Outstanding Marines are Outstanding Leaders. I admire each and every one that I came into contact with. Boot camp is the best place to start being a leader. You might fail at first. We went through many a Platoon Guide and Squad Leaders but if you never give up YOU CAN BE A SQUAD LEADER OR PLATOON GUIDE. I still have respect for my Platoon Guide and First Squad Leader. They had the worst job there is. Baby sitting the rest of the platoon but they were leaders and the Platoon Guide made his first rank of Private First Class upon Graduation.
My advice might not be the easiest path but I do feel it will be the most rewarding.
Semper Fi! I look forward to calling you Devil Dog so STAY MOTIVATED!!!
Mike

Aahh... the transformation from turd to devil dog.. good luck my friend. Oh and do have fun with the experience. There is fun to be had. Just don't get caught! ;)

Hoorah

Look forward to calling you brother in 13 weeks. Move fast, yell loud, and never complain! Oh... and never answer affirmative if asked if you would like to sit in the Senior Drill Instructor's chair. Trust me

Thank you for standing up to volunteer for your country, for all of us.

Don't lean against walls with your hands in your pockets.

Don't touch the DI's hat.

Never answer with "I don't know."

Oh and,

"You'll be soorrreee!"

Good luck, God Bless, and keep this in mind.

Marines approach life by seeking excellence in all things that they do. That includes making a rack, brushing your teeth, shaving, mess time, etc.

There is no 'good enough', only the best.

And you will not even know what these words mean until you've been pushed so far past your breaking point you won't know which way is up.

And by the time you're done, you will know what strength is, for the first time in your entire life.

You'll be sorreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Sorry, had to be the first to say it. Good luck and always try to be near the exit of the shower when you guys are showering. When the sergeant softly says clear out, you'll be the first (and won't have to trip over everyone else scrambling to get out).

Good luck, you won't need any. i look back to my 13 weeks on Parris Island and would like to do it again. Remember it is all a game, a serious one though. Semper fI AND NEVER QUIT ON YOURSELF
