Hello everyone. Allow me to introduce myself.
My name is John Handley, but around these parts I'm known as Balog. On Monday August 16th I will be leaving for USMC boot camp at MCRD San Diego. Before I go, I'd like to take a minute to say goodbye and thank you to all the wonderful people I've had the honor of meeting here. This place has become like a really big, exceptionally odd family to me. Even tho computer troubles have kept me offline a lot lately, the comradery I've found here is amazing.

First off, I know I'm gonna miss a lot of people. I apologize, but I've been helped by far too many of the good people on this site to mention everyone.

Second, I'd like to apologize to some people. In my youthful zeal I've found myself guilty of attacking the poster and not the argument more times than I care to recall. I truly regret any offense I may have given. I especially remember some unforgivably rude comments I've made to Golgo-13, Lone_Gunman, and Jeff White. No hard feelings.

Third, many thanks to the ones I've known as mods. Art Eatman, Preacherman, 4v50Gary, Oleg Volk, pax, Derek Zeanah, Mal H, tyme, Bartholomew Roberts, George Hill, Tamara, and above all C.R.Sam have been incredible. Their patience and gracious help has never ceased to amaze me. They take a lot of flack, but without their sacrifice of precious time and effort this site wouldn't be the great place it is. I'm gonna miss you.

Lastly, the ones I've known as members. I've lost track of the information and entertainment I've gained reading and talking with 4570Rick, Nightcrawler, Skunkabilly, Jim March, Byron Quick, H&Hhunter, Don Gwinn, Kor, MPayne, BigJake, nsf003, fix, sm, P95Carry, Thefumegator, and a hundred more I can't remember right now. You've brightened my life in ways you can't imagine.

A word from the wise--keep your head down and your mouth shut and eat quickly and you'll be fine for the next 13 weeks. Good luck and be sure to check in when you get done.

Greg

Years from now you'll look back fondly on boot camp as one of the defining times of your life. Weeks from now you'll think that statement is a cruel joke, but trust me. Give it all you got, never give up, good luck!

Ninja. Become invisible so the DI doesn't even know you're alive.
Good luck in the Corps and I Salute you!

Good luck to you. You've chosen a fine branch of the service and if you stick with it you will never regret your decision.

If you haven't already, I would suggest that you pick up a copy of Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers , the book, NOT the movie and read it before you go. Then keep it and re-read it later.

From Platoon 1113, '87, Good Luck.
Do everything as hard and as fast as you can, and realize you'll STILL be dumped on anyway, and you'll get along fine.

(damn, now I'm feeling Old)

My son entered boot camp at MCRD San Diego in June 2001. He went in at 6'0", weighing 220 pounds.

When we went to his graduation, we saw something that cannot be described.

When they say "The change is forever", they mean it. And, it's all for the good.

Congratulations on joining what I believe is the finest fighting force on the planet earth (and this is from a career Army NCO!)

Good luck, God bless, and let us know how it was when you return.

Do you have an MOS locked in, or are you open contract? Just curious. One guy I went in with who was open contract ended up going from 0300 infantry to Russian language translator after he took the ASVAB. Something to think about...

Semper Fidelis, Boot!

Keep your sense of humor and give 110% (they'll pull it out of you anyway)

Come back a MARINE!

A HighRoader turned Marine. That's gotta turn out something special! :)

Best of luck to you.

Give 110% always These next few years will be some of the best of your life. Enjoy them and as I said always give 110% and leave no one behind ever. My son is a grunt with the 101st just came back from the sandbox His attitude has sure changed for the better. (he grew up)
