Border Patrol agents discovered a 35-foot-long tunnel beneath the U.S.-Mexico border after it caved in and the asphalt roadway above it collapsed, officials said.

The tunnel ended in a patch of vacant land near the San Ysidro port of entry, said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She said it was about 3 feet by 3 feet and appeared to have been used recently.

It wasn't immediately clear when the tunnel was built or whether it might have been used for smuggling drugs or people.

Authorities sealed off the U.S. side with sandbags and metal after discovering it on Monday, Mack said.

The tunnel is across the border from an area that is either owned or leased by Mexican Customs.

More than a dozen tunnels have been found along the southwestern border in recent years. In 2003, Border Patrol agents found a tunnel that originated in a private house in Mexico and ended in a parking lot on the U.S. side. A year later, U.S. authorities found evidence that someone was trying to rebuild the passageway.

"We do believe it's a trend where smugglers are attempting to go underground after 9/11 as a result of the heightened security," Mack said.

Yes, which proves just how industrious those Mexicans are. They not only mow lawns, clean pools, cook food, do janitorial work for Walmart - they'll build you a tunnel if you need one.

Given this tunnel was found in California - is it possible it was constructed by gun owners anxious to escape the Golden State?

Cikuritie Options

Now, some years back, some pompous govern"mental" bovine stated that the USA had a satellite system that can locate these tunnels down to approximately 50 feet of depth. Now, did they lie then, or are they lying now?

1) If this capability exists, use it. Locate the tunnels; fill them with something deadly.

2) Better yet, open varmint season on criminal elements that attempt to enter illegally. Post our young military "snipers-in-training" and give them "live-fire-exercises". I'm not cheap, I'll even spring for the bullets.

3) Could we build a 50 feet above ground, and 1/4 mile underground, solid wall of steel, with 10 trillions volts power (I obviously don't know what I'm talking about with electricity) and every time some one touches it, or even comes close, they become toasted critter snacks for Bowser.

4) Or, we could invade Mexico, take everything of worth, exploit their riches and leave them baffled.

5) Or, one last option. I doubt it would work though--it's a long shot. We could elect an independent for President, and let the new leadership in Washington come up with a genuine way to keep Mexico where it belongs, south of the border. It would never work. It requires intelligence, common sense, and a spinal cord. Not one of the typical politician qualities.

For more than a decade, what smugglers haven't been able to go over, they've gone under. The arrest of 19 year old Ricardo Jacinto from Patagonia, with another man from Mexico , charged with carrying drugs through a tunnel from Nogales , Sonora to Nogales , Arizona , could be one more case in point.

"Marijuana, and it turned out they were coming from a drug tunnel," said Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada.

This week's tunnel was the third time one was found at the same home just across the street from the International border.

"It's about 40 feet between there and the other side of the street, so it’s a good location for drug smugglers to tap into the United States ," Estrada said.

Estrada saw his first drug tunnel in Nogales in a church in 1995.

"Quite a surprise, quite a novelty as a matter of fact but it opened their eyes as to how these people want to continue working and moving drugs across the border," Estrada said.

He said that 19 tunnels have now been found in and around Nogales , and expects to keep finding them, since the Nogales wash runs underground and connects to storm drains on both sides of the border.

"I think we will because as you put more pressure at the ports, you have more Border Patrol, you have more agents, you have Homeland Security, here at the border, they’re going to be looking at more ways to get the drugs across, and that’s a good way to do it,” Estrada said.

It’s such a good way that more than the law alone will be needed to keep smugglers from burrowing into the country.

"You have to rely on citizens, you have to rely on information that comes through, you have to rely on a lot of things that tell you maybe there’s a drug tunnel in the area,” Estrada said.

Estrada estimates this latest tunnel to have been used anywhere from a few weeks to a few months because dirt was still being removed. He says he does not believe anyone is living there right now.

I'm pretty sure there are 17 year olds all over the world that would jump at the chance to come to the US and wash dishes, mow lawns or whatnot. How come Mexicans get a free pass by skipping over our immigration laws just cause they happen to share a border with the US that no other nations do?

The Mexicans are not getting a free pass, they are being singled out over other groups who are illegally immigrating.

Congress knows that America needs the illegal immigrants as the native-born no longer wish to work and thus cannot effectively enforce the border. On the other hand, Congress needs the Welfare State, the purported reason for illegal immigration, in order to buy votes to be re-elected.

Seems to me that so much anger could be better directed toward the abolition of the Welfare State and turning off the alleged magnet that the Border Guards claims draws people here.

I'm pretty sure no other country besides Canada shares a border with the US (and I don't see many Canuks wanting to immigrate here.) Mexico tightly secures its southern border, so that limits a lot of S. American traffic. What other immigrant group comes here illegally in as large of numbers as the Mexicans?

The reason they are being singled out is because they are the overwhelming majority of the illegal immigrants.

But let's get this straight: the problem as regards illegal aliens is that they should not be getting social welfare benefits through our system. That is a completely separate question from whether some citizen in Louisiana should get a welfare check.

I think we are all tired of being told what we cannot do to stop a massive invasion. "Christian" behavior has nothing to do with the problem or the issues. And frankly no state I am aware of has ever operated on the principles contained in the New Testament--if they tried, they didn't last long. Let's be realistic about what it takes to make and keep a nation.
