I am looking into purchasing a bore sight and am wondering what would be the best route to take. Should a guy go with the "old" collimator stlye bore sight or the laser style. I like the collimator stlye because I don't have to set up a target to sight the bore in, and I don't as of yet own a vise to hold my rifle steady enough for the laser stlye. What are some of your opinions on this subject, and maybe other directions I could explore for this matter. Thanks for your help.

You don't need a vice.

An old cardboard box with a couple of V-grooves cut in the ends will serve nicely to hold a rifle during bore sighting, either with a laser or by just looking through the hole in the barrel.

Quite frankly, I can't quite figure out the attraction of all the bore-sighting gimmicks being sold nowadays. Even the best of them only get you close, but nothing can replace actually shooting to finalize sight the settings.

If I couldn't bore-sight a scope, and zero it off a bench with less then half a box of ammo, I'd spend the money on more practice ammo, not fancy bore-sighting gadgets.

The only use I'd have for one is with rifles you can't take the bolt out and see through.
Even then, its real easy to get on paper at 10 yards with a couple of shots, and go from there.

Is there a specific distance I need to be away from a target useing the v-notched cardboard box to get a good bore sight on the rifle? The reading I've done state's that I need to remove the bolt, center the bore on the center of the target, then align the crosshairs of the scope with the center of the target to match. Are there any other tips that I can use to get the scope close? You mentioned being only ten yards away, my assumption then is when I shoot it should hit dead center, then I have a good bore sight thats close enough to shoot at longer distances wothout using 12 boxes of ammo. Thanks again for the info.

I use the $30-40 Laserlyte bore sighter from Wallymart and I set up a white paper plate at 25 yards. I shoulder the rifle as if shooting and dial my crosshairs to be about an inch above the red dot at ~25yds. With that I'm usually really close when live fire tested at 50 yards. After confirming my zero with a 50 yard shot I move to 100 or further.

Bottom line for me is that the Laserlyte bore sighter has saved me a lot of ammo, and we all know how expensive ammo (especially hunting grade) is nowadays.

Bore-sight at a target, or anything else you can see, at least 100 yards away.
Center the bore and dial the cross-hairs to center what you are looking at through the bore.

Then shoot it at close range to insure you are on paper.

At 10 yards you want to be hitting about 1 1/4" low.
You can then move out to 25, or 50 yards and shoot again.

Once centered at that range, the final adjustment at 100 or 200 will just be a few clicks.

Great, thanks abunch rcmodel, I will go out and do that. If I don't have to buy another toy that's fine with me. I appreciate all the advice and thanks again to all.
