For shotguns with interchangeable chokes what is the bore threading supposed to look like? Is it really shallow or is it deep enough to be able to feel. My shotgun model has interchangable chokes, but the threading in my bore is pretty much just spiraling rings and isn't raised at all.

By the way it's a smooth bore and I havent gotten around to getting chokes for it yet. I bought it used and was wondering if the previous owner had shot it withought chokes or if the threads are supposed to be that shallow.

What kind is it? Different manufacturers have different threads. I guess some would feel different than others.

I have shotguns from Mossberg, Benelli, Remington, and Browning. All of them have very fine threads. I don't know if you can "barely feel" them in the barrel, as I haven't really felt the interior of the choke-area of the barrel without a choke in it.

Then it should be Rem-choke. I just took the choke out of my 870, which is also Rem-choke, and felt the threads.

First, I could barely reach them. The threads are all the way at the bottom of the cut. That is, they start about an inch and a half down the barrel. I couldn't reach them enough to run the tip of my finger over them with an index finger, as the middle knuckle of that finger is too large to allow me to reach down the barrel far enough.

Using a pinky finger, I could reach the threads. The threading feels very fine, but is easily felt.

Is it possible you are feeling the barrel very near the muzzle? There are no threads cut there, and it is in fact smooth.
