choke tubes and slugs?

hello everyone,
I have a question for you guys. I really hope this isn't a dumb one!I have a Stoger O/U 12 gauge with a modified choke in the top barrel and a full choke in the lower. I just bought it and haven't fired it yet, it will be my duck gun. anyways- my question is - if i decide to use it for deer- will i have to remove the chokes to shoot slugs? if i have to remove the chokes- is there a "thread protector" for the choke threads in the barrel? Thank You for any advice and for taking time to answear a shotgunning newbie's questions.

Removable choke tubes

I think in general, you always shoot a shotgun with a removable choke tube in place. Keeps the threads from getting damaged. For Foster slugs, I use an improved cylinder tube. Some have good luck with modified. Problem with doubles is getting shots to converge. Could involve considerable experimentation. Then again, that may be half the fun.

Choke is a constriction of the barrel near the muzzle that helps control the spread of the shot.

Some chokes are changeable, with the tubes screwing in and out of the barrel.

Others are fixed, and consist of the barrel metal getting thicker to a given degree near the muzzle.

These last cannot be removed from the barrel.
With rhe removeable tubes, one must always be tightly in place to protect the threads.

O/Us are not the best choice usually for a slug gun, but you may just get lucky and get one that shoots both barrels to the same point.It's not too hard, relatively speaking, to find one with one barrel that's on. Good luck...

For best results, go get yourself 2 new "improved" choke tubes. They will also have other uses besides deer hunting, so they'll be nice to have around.
