According to the Boston Globe, Robert Kraft, who owns the New England Patriots, is looking to build a "Guys Mall" right next to the stadium in Foxboro, MA on Rt 1. The anchor store for this mall is going to be a Bass Pro Shop. Not to be out done, Carbella's will be building a store down the street from the stadium on Rt 1 as well.

I guess the ground breaking for the Mall is this spring so depending on how fast they build, it may be open by the end of the year.

(For those of you who don't know, Robert Kraft is God's gift to the NE Patriots football fans)

I've never been into either one of these stores so are they everything they are hyped to be or are they just another sporting good store.

What do you think. Also, how are the gun/ammo/accessories priced at these chain stores? Good, average or bad?

Speaking of the Pats, here's Adam at the SIG range in NH, front page story in the Portsmouth Herald a few days ago.

I'll go get the text.

Patriots kicker takes aim
By Adam Leech

EPPING - Adam Vinatieri lined up his shot, blocking the outside noise and ignoring the onlookers that surrounded him, intensely watching each move.
And like so many times before, the best clutch kicker in New England Patriots history was dead on.
"That’s really good," said George Harris, director of training at Sigarms Academy, looking over at the cardboard man 30 feet away with a bullet hole through his chest.
An avid hunter, Vinatieri stopped by the academy on Friday to try out the latest line of Sigarms 9 mm handguns. He will spend part of the Patriots off-season in Argentina hunting, which he said is his other passion.
"I think I was born with a gun in my hand," said the South Dakota native. "Professionally, I’m a kicker, but when the off-season comes I love to be outdoors and unwind."
Vinatieri, who passed Gino Cappelletti this season to become the Patriots’ career scoring leader, and his team are in unfamiliar territory. For the past two seasons the Patriots spent the third week in January getting ready for their next opponent - on their way to consecutive Super Bowl titles, giving them three in a four-year span.
But last Saturday, the Patriots’ season, and dreams of being the first NFL team to win three straight titles, ended abruptly at the hands of the Denver Broncos.
"It’s kind of a weird feeling," he said. "Obviously, I want to still be playing. We’ve had so much success in past years, this year was kind of a letdown."
Too make it worse, the game, which ended 27-13, was uncharacteristic of what Patriots fans and Vinatieri have become accustomed to in recent years. The Patriots turned the ball over five times and saw crucial mistakes from veteran mainstays Tom Brady, Troy Brown and Vinatieri, who missed a 43-yard field goal at the end of the third quarter.
"It was strange because in the past we’ve been the team that doesn’t make a lot of mistakes," Vinatieri said. "You can’t make that many bad plays and still win the game, especially against a team like Denver."
Vinatieri said he had no predictions on who will win the Super Bowl this year and, quite frankly, he doesn’t want any of the remaining teams to win.
"I might not watch any of the games," he said. "It’s been us hoisting up the trophy the past two years and I don’t want to watch someone else hoist up our trophy."
Vinatieri, a free agent, also gave no prediction on whether he would be back on the Patriots next year, saying it will depend on how negotiations go.
"If it’s my choice, I’ll be back," he said.
At the shooting range, Vinatieri got lessons from Harris after missing his target on a few shots. Harris likened shooting guns to kicking.
"When you’re getting ready to make a clutch kick, you eliminate all outside distractions and stay within your own world, right?" Harris asked. "We do the same thing."
Vinatieri thanked Harris for spending time with him and even offered to teach him how to kick a field goal, which Harris declined.
And though he’s not going to win a fourth Super Bowl this year, he said he is enjoying the off-season so far.
"It’s nice to have time with my kids and my wife," he said. "So it’s bittersweet."

I don't know how Cabella's is but Bass is awesome!!
I don't have a Bass by me but my daughter in N.C. does. She'll tell you i'm not visiting her I'm there to go to Bass Pro.
Be interesting to see how Massachuetts reacts to a Bass Pro. Not sure they'll like the gun part but they'll probably love everything else in there. And ohh my the Fish Tank.

Been to both and you will be amazed. If you've never been to either they will put everything you've seen to shame. Go to BPS before Cabela's so that you get the full pleasure of being shocked.

I'm hoping Bass Pro comes to Memphis. The city signed a letter on intent with Bass Pro last month to work on redeveloping the Pyramid into one of the world's largest Bass Pros. The Pyramid has been vacant since the NBA Grizzlies and University of Memphis Tigers basketball teams moved to the newly opened FedEx Forum earlier this year. We've got a small Bass Pro in Memphis, already, but if this deal goes through we'd get one of the massive ones with all kinds of cool attractions.

couple thoughts...
adam vinatieri is from s.d. - so it should surprise no one that he might know which end of a gun to point downrange.
what is surprising is that bass pro and cabela's both want into massachusetts... however, those two shops are sure to be good for gun rights there. don't know about bass pro, but cabela's stocks and sells ar's and some ar accessories (wonder if they can do that in ma?)...

But I thought guns were illegel and dangerous in MA, or is that only for the guns that sneak in from the north;)

I am sure that responsible companies like Bass and Cabela's would only sell nice, well behaived guns:rolleyes:

I thought Cabellas was going to Hartford?

The prices I see in the catalogs seem to be the best around, but I know Dick's gives a 10% discount if you buy by the flat / case.

I've been to the Bass Pro Shops flagship store in Springfield, and it is awesome. But right by the stadium??? One more thing to totally F.U. rt.1 on a sunday.:cuss:

And how much more are they going to charge for stuff? the only reason I want to go to a Pat's game is to buy a $6.00 cheeseburger from McDonald's.

Cabela's will be opening a store in Hartford, see attached link. Having been to every Cabela's store but one, I can only say they are "The Best" bar none. Bass Pro is a disappointment compared to Cabela's...(and I've been to all the Bass Pro shops too). The only stores that come close to Cabela's would be Scheels, who have better gun selections and higher quality merchandise. Take a visual tour of a Cabela's store on their web site, you'll see what I mean.

As far as traffic jams around stadiums, the Kansas City Cabela's is located directly accross from a NASCAR motor speedway....they prefer building where the crowds are.

Not 5 miles from each other!!!

The proposed new Bass Pro Shop and the Cabella's are both planned for a stretch of Route 1 from the Patriots Stadium, up the road to Plainville, just a few miles away.

I live about 8 miles from there and can't wait, if it happens.

Since Mass guns laws stink so much, I was concerned, and yesterday sent the following letter to Cabella's. I also post their reply. FYI.

Letter:
What is Cabela's planning to do when they locate a store in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts Gun laws are the worst. If you plan to have your store a destination location, please keep in mind how hard Massachusetts politicians are working to prevent us from owning, buying and trading guns in Massachusetts.

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to see Cabela's come here. I am only about 10 miles from your proposed location, and I'd think I died and went to heaven if you had a store here. It's just that I hope you will try to use your substantial retail and employment leverage to gain some concessions from the Massachusetts legislature, to insure that you will have the ability to sell firearms and related goods, especially handguns and semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, which they are trying so hard to ban.

We here in Mass live day to day waiting for the other shoe to drop on our gun rights. In the home of Smith and Wesson and the Springfield Armory, as well as Lexington, the site of the first shot of the Revolutionary War, we have less rights every day.

I wish someone in your management would contact the Gun Owners Action League G.O.A.L. in Massachusetts and see if they can update you on some of the problems we currently face in Massachusetts. I'm not suggesting you ask their approval, just find out if we can work together to make your store a HUGE SUCCESS, and for a long time.

I would appreciate this e mail be passed up the line to a responsible person who has the authority to reply to me and present this information to the decision makers at Cabela.

I love your products, and look forward to the day I can hold them in my hand before I order them. Your catalog has been my friend for years, but a store would be out of this world."

Thank you for you help.

Cabella's reply:
Dear Bill,

I have received your request for a new store site in the Massachusetts area. As we continue to gather information on sites and review them we will announce new store openings; at the current time no site has been announced in Massachusetts.

We appreciate the information you have provided us with and I want to clarify your concerns with any future plans to place a Cabela's in the Massachusetts area.

As with all large scale projects there are countless rationales why we choose certain locations. Strategically, we choose our sites with these rationales in mind; as I am sure you can concur with, accessibility is key as well as population, hunting and fishing demographics, etc. I understand your concerns with the current gun laws and how you feel it may cause an issue with our business but we are continually working with the government to raise awareness of gun safety and training. I would also like to inform you that the community, city, county and state as well Cabela's executives collectively make decisions on sites that would be most beneficial for reciprocity.

We do respect your opinions and concerns but would like to assure you that our choices have been well thought out and researched.

Once again thank you for your loyalty and support.

Sincerely,
Cabella's

My Impression
Cabella's replyed to my letter in less than an hour. I liked that. I hope they have plans to deal with the long wait for gun purchases and lack of recirocity with neighboring states like Rhode Island (only 5-7 more miles down the road) and New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut ect, which presently have no cooperation from Massachusetts.

I don't know how many gun buyers would drive to Mass to buy a firearm, if they couldn't bring it home with them.

Just my observation.

Bill

Our local newspaper reported a couple of days ago that Cabela's is considering opening a store here in Lacey, WA Although Cabela's is looking for some monetary assurances from the local government (probably in the form of tax cuts or reductions in fees), the article sounded pretty positive.

Today's Minneapolis Star and Sickle newspaper had a front page story about Bass Pro Shops being the anchor for Phase 2 of the Mall of America here in Minnesota. I hope it works out.

http://www.startribune.com/535/story/205808.html

We have two Cabelas somewhat close to Minneapolis - One about an hour south in Owatonna and a brand new one about 45 minutes Northwest in Rogers.

I love the gun rooms at Caballas. Although somewhat pricey, they have a great selection. Hopefully Bass Pro Shops will move in here and give them a little bit of competition now that Galyan's has changed to non-handgun Dicks.

They are both pretty sweet, you all won't be disappointed. I'm partial to Cabela's but Bass Pro is pretty cool too. Bass Pro had all the cool marine life swimming around the store.

When Cabelas and Bass Pro do finaly open up stores in Mass, I know they will have a limited supply of firearms and ammo. Why, because they won't sell alot firearms or ammo in this state to make it worth the effort to keep them in stock. Dicks and Walmart are two stores that sell firearms in state. Dicks sell all types of firearms including handguns in their NY state store, but in their Mass stores they barely have any firearms. At the two store I have been to they mostly carry air rifles, paint ball equipment, and some shotguns. Walmarts tend to have a very sorry stock of firearms, also mostly paint ball and air rifles. Though, they will special order most long guns in their catlog. There ammo selection is non existant compared to NY or PA stores I have been too. I welcome Cabela and Bass Pro and I hope they do well here in Mass. I bet they will be popular places for many out-door types and with the few hunter left in Mass.

Have you ever read the California laws, they are by far worse than Mass.

Anyway, the current Springfield Armory is in Illionis not Mass. We do have Kahr, New England Firearms, Savage, Troy Industries and of course S&W.

the springfield armory I was speaking of is still in Springfield, not the gun company....;)

Why not one in NH, right on the line near Nashua?

Then you'd get the tax-free sales, the people coming from MA for the tax-free sales, and people in NH can actually just BUY A GUN at the counter with a quick check! (And use the range!)

Plus they wouldn't have protestors in front of the store if it were in NH...
