Can anybody tell me about the two rifles I bought today? I was told one was quite old and the other was semi-old. Values? General info is appreciated.
Gun #1 is a Bolt action Springfield Model 56 Made by J. Stevens Arms co. I cannot find serial #'s.
Gun #2 is also a bolt action Marlin Model 80 G. Connot find serial #'s on this one either.
Bought them from someone I know. didn't really buy for any other reason other than My young boys can learn to shoot with them and I also am fond of some of the older guns. (I also have a Winchester model 12 from 1917, it was my wifes grandfathers gun) Especially when I get to hear some of the history behind them. The stories that go along with them make them interesting to me. But if anyone has any other info I would appreciate it.

From Gun Digest Book of Gun Values:

Stevens Model 56 - (?, not sure if this is a Springfield like you say), $40-70, bolt action, detachable box mag, 24" bbl, 43 1/2 " OAL, 6 lbs, uncheckered walnut/pistol grip/black forearm tip/rubber buttplate. 1935 to 1948.

Marlin 80series - $70-90, made 1934-1965(various for models 80, 80C, DL, E...80G not listed), 24" bbl, uncheckered walnut/pistol grip, detachable box mag, bolt action, black buttplate.

that marlin should be a fantastic shooter, but proly made before even hi velocity rounds came out. so put the rear site on its lowest setting, put in some hi vels, and see what happens. Also i wouldnt shoot hypers in it, might not like that pressure spike. Also , take it out of the stock, and see if on the rear left side of receiver, there are two screw holes. if there is, then you can put a factory peep site there. So cool!!!

I could be wrong on the exact year, but I believe firearms made before 1968 were not required to have serial numbers so that is probably the reason why. Theyre probably more than fifty years old. I found the serial number thing out when i tried to find out how old my winchester model 35 was. good luck

No serial number on my Model 80, which my dad had before I was born in 1948.

I never knew what these holes were for. So, does Marlin offer such a sight? Can I get one from Marble or some other source? This one?

i would check numrich, and check on models 80 80dl 81 and 81dl. also there is a dude named JRH over on rimfirecentral, he makes a disc for the peepsite that is so good, it made me weepy. he may know where to get one. I would deff call marlin as well. they are soooo good! i was smokin a guy on the 50, and he was shooting a ruger race gun that was scoped, and he was looking at me, with my peep site, like I was from outer space.
you will need to channel out that wood a bit , to get it to fit.

hey !!! look down on the left side of that peep site page, they mention the marlin 80 and 81. don't know if it is a factory style, proly not, but it is up to you if you wanna origional , I guess.
