I was given a Springfield 22 s, l, lr, bolt action single shot rifle by my grandfather some 50 years ago. He is now gone and the gun appeared old then. It was made by J Stevens Arms Co. Model 38 and that is all that appears on the barrel. There is no serial # that I can find. I would hate to guess how many rounds have been put through it but it is still one of the best open sights rifles I own. Might there be someone here that knows anything about the rifle and about when it was made. I sure would appreciate any information that is available. John

Springfield

In the largest letters before any other printing is the name Springfield. After that is the J Stevens Arms Co. with the address and is in real small letters. Model 83 is then printed in the same size letters as Springfield. This rifle doesn't have a clip.

I did a search and could not find if the Model 38 was single shot or took a magazine.

I took my CMP Stevens M416 to the range this weekend and shot it at 100 yards. At the time Stevens barrels were considered to be excellent and my barrel was quite good.
