Bought a FNAR recently. My first impression of it was ugghhh that's ugly, after fondling it some I kind of started to like it. I have wanted an m1a for awhile, but they are currently pretty tough to find, and expensive when you do find one.

First impressions: PROS

Adjustable stock is nice, I like a shorter LOP.
Rails built in was also nice.
Fairly light weight, seemingly lighter than an m1a.
Mag seems very well built.
"Feels" solid... Hard to quantify, but you guys know what I mean.
Trigger is good, seems to break at about 4 lbs.

CONS
Looks.
Based off of the BAR hunting rifle. Not neccessarily a bad thing though.
Mag is only made by FN currently.. meaning they cost $50 a pop.
Cleaning and disassembly is more complex than most tacticool rifles.
Mag disconnect is a little far forward, I have smallish hands and can barely reach it without moving my hand forward.

AT THE RANGE!!
I slapped a 2x aimpoint 9000 I had laying around on it to do some plinking. I am planning on buying a higher zoom scope, but this had to do for now.

I shot about 60 rds through it. I had no malfunctions of any kind. The gun felt very solid, the trigger was nice, and pulling the bolt back felt smooth.

Recoil felt like less than any other .308 I have shot (bolt action savage and 16 inch saiga .308) , I don't like recoil and I had no problems shooting this rifle.

This rifle is significantly more accurate than I am. The range that I was at was limited to 100 yards... at this range shooting paper was actually almost boring. I put 8 shots into a 2.5 inch circle using the 2x scope off of a bench, I think the rifle could have done better, but my skills were limiting it's potential. I was also popping golf balls that were all over the field.. it's fun watching them fly through the air!! Oh yeah I was using 180 gr federal ammo I got cheap at walmart.

Overall I am quite happy with my purchase. I plan on getting a higher zoom scope, at which point I'll post some targets. I might post a pic of the rifle.. it's just stock though, with an aimpoint 9000l on it.

which model? how was the cyclage(is that a word?) I have been eyeing an FN down at the local shop... how availiable was the rifle to find?

I bought the last one in my gun shop also. Was looking for a AR-10 type but this FNAR was available. Don't know what to top it with yet, maybe a a fixed 4x or a 3x9? Agree that it is very solid. Any suggestions on sites are welcome.

sight/scope for FNAR

Greg,

I started a thread recently just to answer the FNAR question you ask:
http://www.thehighroad.org/showpost.php?p=5272484&postcount=1
I was a little more aggressive in my requirements, which ended up not getting met within my budget. Anyway, I was happy with the savvy and useful feedback from THR members.

P.S. - My FNAR has been shipped and should arrive Saturday or Monday. Can't wait....

Does a grip-pod work well with the FNAR?

I recently purchased a FNAR and want to put a grip-pod on it, but all the pictures I see of them none have grip pods just wondering why. It seems like a perfect fit.

I recently purchased the FNAR and have not had it to the range yet, but so far, I think it is great. Honestly, I'm not sure why people say it is an ugly gun. I think it looks great. This is my rig below. I topped it with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50mm scope and sunshade. I'm doing a blog on the entire build at this link. Check it out. I'm as proud as a new father. http://arealmansreviews.blogspot.com/search/label/FNAR

It says on the FNH USA site that the FNAR is "descended from the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR)." Since John M. Browning contracted a lot of his designs to FN, this leads me to believe that the FNAR is, in fact, based on the original BAR; though I have little to base this on but conjecture.

the only relation this gun has to the original BAR is the name. The original was an open bolt, full-auto only gun with a gas system. This Gun is a closed rotary bolt.

It is descended from the BAR, the hunting model not the 1918 model. It's not even remotely close to the design of the 1918.

Marketing.....

I've had my FNAR for a while now and I like it very much. The only complaint I have about it is the cost of mags.
