It's a Bushmaster AR-15 pistol model 97S. Pick it up tomorrow. I'm going to try to post a link so keep your fingers crossed.

bushmaster.com/shopping/Carbon15/az-c15p97s.asp

I bought it as a just fun to shoot pistol. It's loud and puts out a fireball that's unbelievable. I plan on a red dot on the top rail and something evil on the bottom rail.

Like I said, it's just a grins and giggle pistol for an old fart like me to enjoy. :)

Thanks for reading ad hope the link works. :)

Cool pistol. Can you get a holster for it? (I'm serious).

gbran, if that's you in the picture, remind me not to get on your bad side.

EddieCoyle,

That's gun writer/enthusiast Jeff Cooper from gunblast.com (as cited in Seven High's subject line)

That's one mean looking gun. Being a new shooter getting ready to buy my first 9mm it's out of my league right now. Sure beats having 10 in the magazine eh? Have fun with it.

Sorry it took so long to get back. I've been quite ill.

I was feeling well enough to pick up the Bushy yesterday. Gave her a good cleaning, grabbed a couple 30 round mags and headed out back.

I wasn't going for accurcy so much as a function test. So paper plates at 25yds. Just for grins I squeezed the round from the hip and was quite supprised that I actually hit the plate!

Out of the box it shot a little low but still on the plate at 25yds. The first half of the mags I shot slow fire off hand, the second half was rapid fire (just as fast as I could pull the trigger) from the hip. The paper plate was pretty safe on rapid fire. :)

I was running Wolf .223 55gr JHP. The Bushy ate it like candy. No hickups. I'd say it's about as loud as a .44Mag but in a different way. Kind of a boom and crack put together. I would judge the kick at somewhere just over a .357 6" shooting .38 specials. In other words, pretty tame.

I really didn't noice much of a fireball until a dark cloud passed overhead. Oh yeah!! Very, very cool!

Thanks for reading.

I've had the pistol for a while. It is interesting and a lot of fun.

Holster?
I made a shoulder sling for the gun by replacing the screw, under the tube, with a standard rifle sling stud. Same threads.
The sling is handy for carrying the pistol to my range, about 800 feet away.
If there was a need to carry the pistol concealed, it could be carried with a short shoulder sling. The pistol rides under the arm well and could be concealed with about a 3/4 length coat (20 round mag).
Recently I bought the Kel Tec PLR-1 and that would conceal even better.

Here's a fireball comparison of the Bushmaster, Kel Tec and AK pistols.:)

Bushmaster sells a sling that's designed for the 97S but haven't seen a holster made for this type pistol. I did read of a guy that claimed he uses a battery powered drill motor holster from Home Depot for his ar-15 pistol though.

Seems to me that a simple sling would work the best in most situations.

M2, between the Kel-Tec and the 97S, which do you like better, and why, or are they like kids...same but different?

Rabbit.

Both are fun to shoot and quite impressive but here's my opinion of the the differences.

The Kel Tec costs about half as much as the BM. About $400 and $800.

The BM is traditional AR but made of Carbon 15.
The Kel Tec action is much modified AK. The receiver and bolt stay very clean.

I like the shape of the Kel Tec receiver and pistol grip best, but I wonder about the long term durability of the plastic receiver. Since Kel Tec stands 100% behind their products I suspect that any long term problems will be taken care of.

The Kel Tec barrel is 2 inches longer, 9 inches. The Bushmaster is two inches longer overall with a shorter barrel, 7 inches.
I chronographed them at 2296 and 2514fps.

Both of mine function fine but I like the Kel Tec action best.

Without having done a good head to head comparison it appears the Kel Tec is the most accurate.

I don't like the look of the BM buffer tube sticking out the back.
The somewhat stark look of the plain barrel and gas piston tube of the KT has grown on me.

Kel Tec is working on add ons like, forearm, sling, flash hidder and a laser forearm. No doubt more stuff will follow.

I'm not about to get rid of my Bushmaster but I do like the Kel Tec better.:)

I've always been confused and I am hoping someone can figure this out for me. Citizens can obtain tax stamps, if they are a state that grants its peasants permission, to have short barreled rifles if they jump through the right hoops and pay the fees. Is it really worth it to do that when you can just buy an AR pistol?

I'm thinking more along the lines of why other with getting a 14" M-4 knockoff, when you can get a AR pistol in .223 or 9MM and use that as an entry tactical firearm. Other than muzzle velocity being higher, is there any real advantage?

IMO the AK and Kel Tec pistols with a short butt stock would handle better in some situations than the unstocked pistol.

Trying to maneuver and accurately shoot either pistol with a typical two hand pistol hold is unwieldy. I find myself holding the guns with one hand on the grip and the other hand forward. Usually just in front of the magazine, like on the first picture I posted shooting the BM pistol.

On the other hand, the small size of the pistols is an advantage in other situations and (for me) is more important than a butt stock.

The best situation would be a removable stock.
But since our gun laws are a patchwork quilt of senseless stupid rules, we can't own what might be best.

For me the unstocked AR/KT pistols are just the right size.

I've kicked around the idea of buying a 97S as well ... then registering it as an SBR and putting a stock on it.

Thanks for the response, M2. Helps a lot. I even went back and watched the PLR1 firing video that was posted a few months ago a few more times- I'd downloaded it.

I wonder if Eric can make a holster for one?

Might be a fun coyote pistol, especially with a bandoleer holster. Tough to shoot from horseback, though, but it'd clean out Ol' Dobbin's ears.

Thanks again. I'm working on my summer toy list.

Rabbit.
