Was driving through a small town this past Saturday and noticed an old hardware store that had a small sign in the window telling about a out of business sale. But it was the week before. I saw that there was someone in the store so I stopped and went in to see if there might be anything left over for sale. An older woman inside was taking stuff down off the wall which was behind where the counter used to be. I noticed in a bunch of old pictures there was some old guys shooting. I asked her if they used to sell guns. She said no but they did sell ammo at that time but quit selling it a couple years ago. She said her husband had died the first of this year but some time before that he had packed up what was left and put it in the back room thinking one of his shooting friends might want it. But no one ever came in to get it. Anyway it was still there so she wanted to know if I might want it. She wanted $350.00 for it. There was three boxes. Only the smallest box was open and I could see it was full of primer's and some caps. So I bought it all sight unseen. Got it all home and this is what I found.

You lucky guy! Heck, the percussion caps alone are almost worth what you paid considering how hard they are to find right now. You may have used up your good karma for the year with this. Congrats.

Lucky, lucky man. I bought the last tin of Remington #10's the local hardware store had yesterday. Between them and the CCI #11's, I have about 6 tins; you, sir have hit the jackpot!

PS. Don't suppose those .224 Hornady bullets are 50 gr V-max? If so, would be interested in helping your regain a bit of your investment.

MacAR, --- They are Hornady varmint 50 gr SP. But Due to not knowing what will happen with ammo in the future I have decided not to sell any of the purchase.

Have you tried making your own caps? After several attempts, and failures, my caps are now working 100%. Shooting season is almost over and I hope that when it resumes the cap crisis is over.

Why is shooting season over??
The temperature is in the upper 80’s and lower 90’s this week. It should be 100 by the middle of May. The humidity is 10% or lower by noon. The fire risk is starting to be High. Public camp sites have banned campfires. This is normal for this time of the year. The monsoon should start about June and end in September. That will bring the humidity to 30-40% on a regular basis. The problem is at that time the temperature be 110-115 degrees.

Can't say as I blame you, Doc. I've been scrounging things myself, just sort of hit and miss at the local shops. Found some pistol primers last Saturday, but still no smokeless powder locally. I'm sure things will be better before long, though. Thanks for getting back, all the same.

Have you tried making your own caps?

No, I haven't. And honestly, 600 caps will last me quite a while. Especially when combined with rimfire, centerfire, and air rifle shooting. I admit, the idea of "rolling your own" is interesting to me though. If I'm wrong and things aren't looking up by the fall, then I may have to look into it more.
