Well, its really starting to look like I might partake in the Elk hunt, maybe also the Deer hunt for next year. Its been easily 10 years since I owned and shot a bow.
So my big question, are there any brands I should really avoid?
Any recommendations on which brands to go for?
Price is somewhat of a factor, of course. I don't want to blow a huge wad, but I don't want to go on the cheap. I'm thinking in the $300-$400 range for the bow, bonus points if it comes as a kit.

can't think of any,offhand.

just stick to a name brand.(PSE,jennings,golden eagle,etc)

Cheapest way would to be to take one of the top brands and buy a bow that is used. I think the site archerytalk.com that has good information on bows. Also has a for sale section that pro shooters are getting rid of their bows. Most are only a year or two old.
Top brands are usually considered to be Mattews and Hoyt. Bowtech is pretty good also.

Agree with Mike. I purchased a 1-year old Mathews Legacy (LH) with Muzzy Zero Effect drop rest, Copper John sight, stabilizer, LimbSavers, and Mathews quiver for $500. It was listed on ArcherTalks' classifieds.

Allowed me to buy a completely tricked out high-end bow for less than the price of a new Legacy, LX or Outback alone.

Get it from a pro shop or take what you find used to a pro shop. A pro shop can set you up without going through trial and error on fit, draw length, arrow spine, etc. They will also tune it for you. You'll be much happier with it and the accessories will match you and the bow.
