That was an interesting read and look-see at the pictures.

That whole site is really cool.

Edit: What is that IIIA stuff made of? He seemed to be using only a few thin layers in his test. Wouldn't more layers be used in actual application in the real world?

Am I correct in thinking that IIIA is supposed to be some of the best armor available?
I was always under the impression it was designed to stop rifle cartridges--guess not.

I don't no nuthin about this stuff, but just looking at the dent in the clay makes me shudder!!!

Dents in the clay? I shudder at those, but what is really chilling is the power of a rifle as shown by the effect the rifle bullets have upon the clay.

One thing I've always wondered after looking at that is just how lethal is taking a slug to the chest to someone in 3a armor? No where near as big as hole as the 7.62 round, but a sizeable dent is left. I'd guess its pretty survivable if not really painful. Accurate?

Class V

Resistant to many rifle rounds and ALL special rounds for handguns ( including armor piercing, hollow point, explosive,Glaser,THV and ATE.)

5.56 x 45mm
7.62 x 39mm
7.62 x 51 NATO
US .30 Carbine FMJ
.30-06

Eg : SEMA Personal Armor ( France ) , Highmark Bomb Disposal Suit Hard Armor Category I ( Ireland )

US Armor
Body Shield Fragmentation Vest : typical Class I ,II/IIA or IIIA ,average weight is around 7lbs.

Beta Vest
Building Entry Team Armor typical armor level is Class IIA or IIIA.

Ranger Tactical Vest
the typical vest is Class IIA or IIIA. the addition of rifle-resistant inserts,Hex Hard Case,a ceramic laminate and 7mm Zoned Armor Steel raises the protection to class IVA.

Hey, esheato

Hey, esheato--

Where did you find that nifty chart? Is there a whole webpage I could peruse?

THX

P.S.

I just bought some AP M2. I expect delivery like next Friday. If others would like some, check out PolyGunBag's website. They've got neat stuff.

Now notice the effect shotgun slugs have on all this different stuff goes like a hot knife thru butter. After I saw this website I went out a bought a whole bunch of slugs.

The problem with stopping the higher power rounds becomes blunt force trauma to the body, even without penetration.
It is possible to stack up enough Kevlar to stop a rifle round. The problem is that the internal organs cannot survive the impact. By changing to a hard plate the inpact is spread out over a larger area and reduces the blunt force injury.
Many years ago when soft armor was being developed it was tested against rifle energies and the resulting blunt force would have destroyed the heart for a center of chest shot, even against the breastbone.
Humans are just no that tough.

Yeah, that's really amazing. I always assumed it would hurt like the devil to be shot while wearing a vest but those dents in the clay make it look like it would be similar to taking a sledge hammer hit to the chest - not fun.

I finally took a look at the rest of that site - good clean fun. Science experiments and guns :D

Take care,

Joe

So most armor will defend against most pistol cartridges.
What sort of AP versions of these handgun rounds will defeat said armor?
I'm not sure if there are AP rounds of most handgun cartridges.

I had 3 level IIa vests that we tested. They stopped 180gr FMJ 40S&W from sig P229, a 115gr FMJ 9mm from sig P226, and 230gr 45acp from a S&W 4506. But it didn't some these really exotic 44 magnum armor-defeating rounds, which I'm not sure where they came from. In fact, we strapped 2 vests on top of each other to a telephone pole, and the round went through the first vest and halfway through the second. I have the bullet still somewhere, I'll post a pic of it.
