Three men are being held for a Palmview home invasion where an 11-year-old boy was shot defending his mother.

Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office deputies told Action 4 News that it happened off Minnesota Road and 8 Mile Line between Palmview and Mission around 12:30 a.m. Friday.

The homeowner said she and her 11-year-old son were in bed when she heard banging coming from the front door.

She got up to check and she saw two Hispanic males men wearing masks and armed with handguns walking towards her.

She quickly closed the bedroom door but one of the men allegedly tried to force it open.

The masked man kept telling her to open the door and she would not open the door.

The woman told deputies that the home invaders shot through the door and hit her son on the left hip area.

Her son had a 22 cal. Rifle and shot back at the alleged robbers.

The woman waited, opened the door, saw that the suspects were gone and called 911.

Deputies found blood all over the floor and noted that the front door had been knocked down.

Paramedics took the woman's 11-year-old son to the McAllen Medical Center where he’s listed in stable condition.

But deputies told Action 4 News that a man with a gunshot wound to his neck ended up at the same hospital.

Investigators said nothing was taken from the home and that the wounded suspect was taken to a hospital in San Antonio for further treatment. He remains under guard.

Criminal charges are expected to be filed against him, if he survives.

Deputies said Border Patrol agents detained two Mexican nationals who were found in the area.

The two men are being questioned about the home invasion.

U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials told Action 4 News that they have filed immigration detainers against the two men.

I for one don't believe it. I'v e heard too often on these forums that a .22 will just PTO and have no effect at all, exept to make them madder.:D

It's a false story put out by some rimfire fan.

Has to be fake. Just has to.

I have read repeatedly that

a) kids with guns only get themselves hurt
b) home invasions don't actually happen in real life and
c) the borders are secure

This is some kind of trick.

But, when the 11 year old gets out of the hospital he should get a medal, and an AR.

Off topic really though, but in this case hopefully the mods will leave it a while, it's a story with a very interesting and unusual circumstance. Fighting back is always the way to go it would seem. Never give in.

I don't think this story is off-topic for THR at all. It perfectly demonstrates that well-raised children are capable of defending their families and their homes in dire situations.

It also demonstrates why blanket laws that require parents to lock up their guns so they are not accessible to their children, are very dangerous.

Sounds like Mom should buy Boy another gun, but in a bigger caliber

Yep, or perhaps someone on here that happens to be local could possibly take some time and take the young man to the range and spend a little quality gun time with him.

This pisses me off a bit though
Her son had a 22 cal. Rifle and shot back at the alleged robbers.

Alleged?... Hmm... In the house that they broke into, shot the 11yr old boy, breaking mom's door down.

What is "Alleged" about it? freaking media.

@ Kingofthehill;

Well, this is America. I'm sure that even a couple felons could sue the news for defamation of character or some other such bullcrap.

Follow the link like i did, sounds on the up and up to me, glad to see they caught the guys, but, what will happen to them? Probably not much, now this 11 year old had to grow up FAST, what a shame, but, at least he had the cool head to do what had to be done. If he wouldn't have, both him and his mom might be dead.

Uh huh, and if the perp manages to survive after taking a shot to the neck (good or extremely lucky shot placement!), then he probably owes his worthless life to .22. Then again, the weapon was a rifle, which gives .22 LR (assuming that is the caliber here) pretty decent velocity and penetration--probably through a door first in this case.

Carl

Why do you slam the story when you don't know what you are talking about?

I will assure you that a .22 can kill a person. Besides the story doesn't say it killed him but they left.

I know a 14 year old that shout through his bedroom wall, through the entertainment center & into his brothers chest that just missed his heart. That came close enough to killing him. So I have no trouble believing this is possible.

Uh, Chill out kingmn. Carl is only giving a little good-natured ribbing to those who have, in the past, applied adjectives such as "useless" and "worthless" to the .22 caliber guns.

I think Carl was making a joke because many people on here do not like the idea of using a .22 for self defense. I don't believe he meant for you (Kingmt) to take offense by it. Sounds like you both have the same idea about the killing potential of a .22LR.

I for one have the same belief. I don't think the bad guys cared what size bullet it was when they came out of the weapon...or got hit by it.

If that was my son, I couldn't be prouder.

While .22 would not be my first choice for a self defense rifle, it beats the heck out of bare hands...

Also, I second the notion that this kid deserves a .223 rifle for future home defense usage. :)

22 cal could mean a lot of things.
my 223 would punch through someones neck lol
so would a 22 mag . . . etc.

...Carl was, of course, posting tongue-in-cheek....for a youngster, a repeating .22 rifle is an excellent home defense weapon...my 16-year-old has both a P90 and a 10/22 with two 25-rounders taped together...and I've told him the 10/22 is his best grab if he can get to it...no one's walking through 25 .22 LR Stingers...and he can place them easily...the mindset this young man showed is exceptional...a new generation of folks who won't take it lying down....proud of him!!! Thanks for posting a win!!!...

...my son also has a Mini-14 with two 30-rounders taped back to back...but within the home, I think the 10/22's the ticket....

Sounds to me like somebody has a son that they can be extremely proud of. He in fact saved their collective bacon, with a .22. By the way, there are a lot of people, and other creatures, that are no longer on this earth due to the ubiquitous .22. GOOD JOB YOUNG MAN!!!:D
