So, you've learn your lesson and will never do it again. BTW, sometimes brandishing is all you need to deter a crime.

on the plus side, you didnt think the gun was unloaded when it was actually loaded...you wouldn't just feel like a dork... you may not feel anything..

That's why you unload at night and load before you go out the next day.
...the gun was empty..." That's why you unload at night and load before you go out the next day.
That's why you never unload the gun at all unless you're cleaning it or firing it.

I personally unload and reload all firearms at night, before i go to bed, as well as first thing in the morning after I wake up. Just a little extra step to assure me a safe sleep/day

Rule 1, modified. It used to read, "A firearm is treated as if it were loaded at all times." It now reads, "Know the state of your firearm at all times."

-Then you are less likely to go unloaded... .

Lol! I was going to say at least he followed rule #1!

Funny thing is, I ALWAYS check to see if I have my CPL with me. I made sure the CPL was with me, but didn't check the cylinder on Sunday. Saturday I loaded with 357s, then when I get home, I unload because I have a shotgun for nights. Sunday, I waltzed out of the house with CPL and no bullets! Do'h!
Good thing it was a well populated hiking trail near a good community and not 3rd and Pine in downtown Seattle!

From now on, I check for the license, and check the cylinder.

The pistol wasn't empty, but I did once find that I had my SP101 speedloaders with the GP100 (and vice-versa), so if I'd had to perform a quick reload with either, I'd have been really fumbling.

Just a moment's carelessness could have had tragic results.

One of my 'rules' is ALWAYS CHECK ANY GUN I PICK UP,NO MATTER WHAT.

Your rules? I thought that was one of THE rules...
;)

Well Spentbrass, count your lucky stars, thank God you didn't need it, and learn your lesson well.

I was just thinking, what is even worse is that you did this with a revolver. If the BG is close enough to you, he might have seen that the cylinder was empty...

Yep, once I was deer hunting with a semi auto shotgun. I could see the round in the tube, but had been wondering for quite some time if there was one in the chamber. I would usually pull the one in the chamber out before going indoors.

It was prime time, and I wasn't going to make the noise to check.

Sure enough, got out of the stand and was on my way out. Pulled the bolt back and looked- nada.

Master Po: Do you hear the grasshopper that is at your feet? ...
Young Caine: No.
Master Po: When you can hear the grasshopper that is at your feet only then shall you be able to know the lighter weight of an empty gun. Then it will be time for you to leave...

I don't know how you could fail to know whether your gun was loaded or not.

I have never carried around an unloaded gun.

"Tim M

I left my 1911 in the refer right next to the milk. Got in a hurry to leave and went to grab my lunch, must have had my hands full and some how managed to set my gun down and pick up my lunch. I didn't even notice I had left home with out it until my wife called me and asked why there was a 45 in the fridg.
Just shows it is never good to get in to much of a hurry."

ROFL! I almost just spit tea all over my keyboard. :D

Makes me wonder if anyone forgot their gun was unloaded when they had to pull it for defense...?..Dirty Harry had a spent gun but was able to bluff...not a good way to find out, an bluffing sure would suck..but it probably has worked for someone somewhere...

All three of my carry guns stay loaded, duty gun included, but, even though I know they are loaded, every time I grab one and strap it on I double check it. I read story once about cop that cleared an apartment with another cop only to find, after arresting the occupant, that he did not have a round chambered. I wil never be that guy.

Slightly off topic. I have taken trailers that were empty but pre-cleared to go right away by several layers of supervisors on a emergency basis once. I was not allowed to open padlock to check.

Sure enough it was empty.
