BP cartridge revolvers?

Hi Guys, hows the shooting been? Muzzleloading season opens here tomorrow.(Michigan) Almost like Christmas eve!!! Anyway I have an 1851 Colt navy 44 and I was thinking about getting a BP cartridge wheelgun. Any suggestions? whats out there? Thanks,and good shooting.

I don't think there's a such a thing as a brand new gun intented for black powder cartridges only; what you do is get a modern repro in 45LC and load/buy black powder cartridges for it.

Some examples include Colt SAA replicas, Remington 1858 with conversion cylinders, 1875 remingtons, S&W top break replicas (expensive!) and so on.

I load BP in a ASM 7 1/2'' Colt SAA clone in .45, two New Dakota .45 5 1/2'',and a 4 3/4'' old model'' Dakota in .45.Also in two 1875 Remmies in .45 Colt as well.In .357 a New Dakota 51/2'' in .357,a ''Thunderer'' .357, and two 1890 Remington Police in .357 with 5 1/2'' barrel,from Uberti.

For a black powder cartridge replica, consider one of the 1860 revolvers converted to 44 Colt or the 1851 or 1861 converted to 38 Colt. The open top design and cartridge need to be kept to lower pressures so are perfect for black powder reloads.

If you just want a cartridge revolver that can handle black powder, any one will do. I have loaded black powder in cartridges as small as the 32 Long up to and including the 44 Magnum and 45 Colt. Of the last two, I prefer the 45 Colt.

I often load BP cartridges for use in a Ruger Vacquero 45 Colt. It's stainless so it cleans up easily and the load is comforatble and accurate at least to 25 yards.

A lot of people that have cartridge revolvers as mentioned have them made or make them by converting a cap and ball to one. Or getting a conversion cylinder and using them both.

You can buy a conversion cylinder for your existing revolvers.

or

You can buy a new Richards-Mason conversion or a 1872 open top.

And, if you want to go with .38spl or 38 Colt, there is the Man With No Name 1851 conversions. They are sweet guns.

I have 3 BP I installed Kirst Konverson cylinders on...only took some dremel work. Not in-expensive.
