Here are the results of a survey of real black powder prices that I did while sitting in a motel room enroute to an auction last Friday. First, the price by supplier:
Deleted, see Post #6

Here's the same data sorted by brand:
Deleted, see Post #6

To save you some time (and your eyes) the least expensive per pound is Jack's Powder Keg house brand in a 25 lb lot: $10.20. KIK in a 25 lb lot from Powder, Inc. is close at $10.40.

Note: These are 'delivered' prices; that is, the cost to put it on my doorstep in Michigan, so they include shipping and hazmat fees. The standard used was fffg, although I didn't see a difference in price between granulations in most of the data.

Most of these data are taken from the supplier's web site. However, I did speak to a couple of them directly. The Hazmat fee has risen from $20 per shipment to $22.50, and the wholesale cost of the powder has also risen in 2009. Some of these web site prices have not been modified from 2008 and so may not be exactly what you'll be charged if you actually order it. Where possible I went all the way to processing an actual order to get the delivered price, so I believe they're accurate, but things can change overnight...

Not sure if it's wrong data or what but the price at powderinc.com include shipping and hazmat fee. 25 pounds of goex powder is $327.50 WITH shipping. Same with jacks powderkeg. Guess I am asking where you got the shipping amounts.

Hey Blacknet:
The Hazmat fee has risen from $20 per shipment to $22.50, and the wholesale cost of the powder has also risen in 2009.

Some of these web site prices have not been modified from 2008 and so may not be exactly what you'll be charged if you actually order it.

So if you take $325.00 from his chart and and the extra 2.50 for shipping you get 327.50. They probably didn't have the web site updated yet when he did the chart because he said he did it last Friday.

Yep. The data on the Powder, Inc. web site this morning is different from what it was on Friday, 1/9/09, by $2.50.

Coonie's wasn't included because they don't have a web site. Nothing wrong with that, but I couldn't get any data at 11 pm while sitting in a motel room, which is when I filled out the matrix.

I have heard from another site that Jack's Powder Keg charges the double fee ($45) for their 25 lb lots and that is not included in the prices on the web site. I've emailed them to find out for sure.

1/13/2009 Update

This update includes the Powder, Inc. hazmat fee increase to $22.50 from $20 and corrects an arithmetic error in calculating the 25 lb lot per pound prices, also for Powder, Inc. Thus the least expensive per pound price is Powder Inc.'s KIK 25 lb lot, at $10.10, with Jack's Powder Keg house brand a close second at $10.20.

I sorted the brand chart to show, within each brand, the least expensive per pound first.

Jack's Powder Keg confirms their web site prices include the hazmat fee, so the data in the chart is correct.
