I have thought a lot about it and besides being cheaper than inexpensive Remington or Manteca factory ammo, BP is far more satisfying to shoot!
You get a bigger bang, per equal bore size, mower muzzle flash, plenty of smoke like in the old West, and a satisfied push of recoil rather than a sharp slap to your hand.
Yep, it's the BEST pistol shootin!

I agee ZVP.

Take a .45 ACP autopistol shooter. To make his range time worthwhile, he'll have to shoot at least a couple boxes of 50 right? Even in slow deliberate fire, he'll be lucky to last an hour.

Now take my .54 caliber horse pistol. Per shot, it's the SAME amount of money as one round of factory .45 ACP. But, if I shoot my gun 100 times, it's going to take all day... and that is great!! :D I am the type who likes to get to the range early and stay for a good long while. I take my time, swabbing between shot strings, talk with people at the range (they often are interested in my BP guns) and just relax. It's very relaxing, and therapeutic.

While I might be the slowest shooter on the line, my cost/fun ratio is MASSIVE.

I'll second that!

Even with paper cartridges it extends the shooting a bit, but makes it fast enough to keep the auto loader friends happy enough.

When I was given my NMA for Christmas I had to take it to the range with my ROA and .50 cal rifle. I ended up spending well over 6 hours poking holes in paper. Had a blast!

I love this much more than the modern stuff!

Have to agree to that, they're a blast to shoot.

My only misgiving is that I don't get to shoot as often as I'd like :)

Any one who goes through 100 rounds of 45 ACP in an hour is not shooting anything like deliberate slow fire. Takes me longer than an hour to shoot a single box.
Now - that being said - range time with my BP guns is far more relaxing. I have two single shots that I use a lot - both .50 caliber. Great fun, challenging and way easier on the wallet than even reloads.

There is a certain satisfaction with black powder that you don't get with a modern S&W, Colt or Ruger revolver (but hey, they're fun too).

Was just talking to a guy about that at the Sarasota County public range this Friday. He inquired, during range cold, about the "cannons" I was shooting, my 1858 and 1860. Topics included amount of shots fired, my three cylinders full in the 15 minute range hot to his 50 or so.

When shooting the New Army time is extended as I load off gun due to the 58s perchance for fouling. :(

Shooting bp at a public always draws comments, on rare occasions, complaints of the smoke, but most are very positive. Friday one guy ask permission to observe for a while as he had a 1851 and had never fired it. Rock on.:p

Really? That's less than one round per minute. You must shoot your .45s SLOW lol! :D

Over the years here, I've introduced many to the joy of holy black, by merely shooting my long guns or pistols and watching the modern gunners come over to see what all the bang and smoke is about, let them shoot a few rounds and the addiction is started.:D;)

Slow

Allowing for target changes, etc. for other shooters...about one round a minute. Slow fire.

Yep. I take my time. Shooting the Mlers, in an hour I am less than twenty shots.
Just yesterday I was at the range with my AR, shooting prone slow fire...in an hour and quarter I shot 35 rounds (and I rushed the last 15).
No reason to hurry.
