Press Release
Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence
united with the Million Mom March
1225 Eye Street, NW
Washington, DC 20005
Phone: 202-898-0792

Rockford, IL - Michael J. Breit of Rockford had a lot of hate, and a lot of ammunition, when he was arrested earlier this week after firing an AK-47 in his apartment here.

Federal agents say they recovered seven guns, more than 1,300 rounds of ammunition, pipe bomb making components and other explosives, a list of government officials and political and public figures with the word "marked" written next to them, and a written plan for 15 heavily armed men to kill 1,500 people at a Democratic presidential meeting.

Breit's library included The Turner Diaries, the anti-government cult novel that inspired Timothy McVeigh, and Guns, Freedom and Terrorism, the book authored by National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre, investigators said.

Breit has been charged with explosives violations. It was unclear whether he would face weapons violations as well.

The 1994 assault weapons ban outlawed the sale of certain models of AK-47s as well as copycats, along with other weapons. The ban is scheduled to expire on September 13 unless President Bush prods Congress to act.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence begins an aggressive four-month campaign to save the assault weapons law in the coming days. The kickoff is the "Million Mom March Mother's Day March to Halt The Assault" at the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC May 9.

Date of Release: April 22, 2004

Reasons scarce for arsenal
Michael Breit's alleged 'hit list' is sealed by federal authorities

By CORINA CURRY, Rockford Register Star

ROCKFORD -- A bumper sticker that reads "Yeah! You can have my gun -- BULLETS FIRST," a tattoo shop ad and an American flag decal decorate the outside of a car belonging to a Rockford man who authorities believe was stockpiling guns, ammunition and bomb-making materials to attack the government, police and liberals.

Few details emerged about 20-year-old Michael Breit after his arrest on federal charges of illegally receiving explosives with intent to use them to kill, injure or intimidate any person or damage or destroy any property. If convicted, Breit could face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

No one answered the door at Breit's Sunnyside Drive apartment building. Breit's parents, James and Leslie Breit, refused to comment. Employees at a Loves Park gun shop where Breit claims to have purchased assault-type firearms and bomb-making materials in recent months said they barely know him.

According to court documents, Breit completed the 10th grade and has been working the past five years at Aaron's Electrical Service in Rockford. Breit has no juvenile record. He has no adult record beyond tickets for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and fishing without a license. He has never been in prison. Court documents say that he "became hostile and defensive and refused to answer any further questions without his lawyer" when he was asked about drug and alcohol use.

Court records also reveal that Breit owned several firearms, several hundred rounds of ammunition, several knives, a sword, hand grenade, bags and boxes of fireworks and bomb-making parts. His home library carried such titles as "The Anarchist Cookbook," which includes instructions on how to make pipe bombs and other explosives, and "The Turner Diaries," a novel about armed revolution against the federal government.

Authorities also seized several of Breit's handwritten notes and drawings, which included a list of current and former federal officials and public figures that he "marked to die" because of political or anti-gun beliefs, drawings of weapons, an armed attack on a limousine and an essay titled "Revolutionary Strike Force," which outlines a plan to kill 1,500 people at a Democratic presidential caucus.

Breit's hit list was sealed as part of the investigation.

The contents of Breit's apartment and his alleged intent to carry out violence surfaced Sunday night when a female neighbor called 911 to report hearing a gunshot.

Rockford police investigated the call. According to court documents, Breit told the officers that he "screwed up" and that he accidentally fired a round from a newly purchased AK-47 assault rifle into a door frame as he attempted to dismantle the gun. Officers observed the bullet hole in the door frame. They discovered Breit's arsenal of weapons and threatening notes and notified agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Breit's one-story, eight-unit apartment building is in a mainly single-family residential area north of Forest Hills Country Club. The windows of the apartment next to Breit's are adorned with Precious Moments decorations.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Keith Syfert would not share details of the case against Breit, except to say that the situation is serious.

"Anyone in possession of explosives and bomb-making materials accompanied by a list of targets, that's something that authorities are going to take very seriously," he said.

Syfert would not release Breit's arrest photo, nor would he say if Breit owns a valid Firearms Owner Identification card. He praised the Rockford Police Department for its work on the case. He couldn't recall a similar arrest in the area in recent years.

Breit is in federal custody. He will appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge P. Michael Mahoney in Rockford this morning. Rockford attorney Dan Cain entered an appearance Tuesday on Breit's behalf.

"This is overblown," said Dan Bement, an employee at Bullet Stop Gun Shop in Loves Park where Breit told ATF agents that he purchased some bomb-making items.

"If this is true, what people are saying, then the guy is an idiot -- there's no reason to fire a gun that way in the city limits. Writing all that stuff down, that was ridiculous," Bement said. "If all these allegations are true, then he should be put in jail. ... I think it's just giving the rest of us that like the sport of shooting a bad name, and it makes me mad."

Bement said he might recognize Breit but didn't know him well.

"The kid came in and bought a gun," he said. "I'm sure he checked out, or we wouldn't have sold him anything. It seemed perfectly normal."

Steve Kauz, who also works at Bullet Stop, said Breit wasn't a regular.

"There are crazy people out there," Kauz said. "We don't talk about that stuff in here, that bomb-making stuff or anything that sounds wrong. We always try to talk with people about what they're looking to do with what they buy. If we ever heard something like that, we'd politely ask them to leave and call the Loves Park police."

Although Breit's light blue Chevy Corsica bears a National Rifle Association emblem sticker and another sticker that reads "My President is Charlton Heston, NRA," it's unclear if he is a member of the nationwide gun ownership advocacy group.

"I don't have any idea who that person is," said Michael Huber, NRA senior field representative who covers the Rockford area from his office near Bloomington.

"The mission of the NRA is to uphold the Constitution and the Second Amendment ... what this person is accused of is not reflective at all of what the NRA stands for."

Rockford Register Star reporter Mike Wiser contributed to this report.

From the affidavit charging Michael J. Breit

On what led to his arrest April 18: A woman called 911 to say she heard a gunshot at 3012 Sunnyside Drive. Breit told officers he accidentally fired a round from a newly purchased gun into his door frame. Breit told officers he had been sitting on his living room couch attempting to dismantle his newly purchased semiautomatic AK-47 assault rifle, when he accidentally pulled the trigger and the rifle fired.
On what they found inside: Breit gave officers written consent to search his apartment and his vehicle, which was parked outside. From his apartment, officers recovered firearms, and components to be used in building pipe bombs. Items recovered included:
A Mauser 8 mm model 98 firearm, serial number 8014, loaded with two rounds of ammunition, which had been manually shortened from its original length.
A Western Arms Corp. 126A shotgun, serial number 21594, loaded with two rounds of 12-gauge ammunition, which had been manually shortened from its original length.
A DS Arms .308-caliber model SA-58 rifle, serial number DS21358.
A Remington 126A model 870 shotgun, serial number B873723M.
A MAADI AK-47 rifle, serial number CM16575.
Two .44-caliber black powder pistols, serial numbers P74683 and 438783.
More than 700 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, along with several magazines, two of which were loaded.
Forty rounds of .308-caliber ammunition, along with two magazines.
A box of black powder loading tools.
A powder flask with black powder.
A 1-pound can of Pyrodex black powder.
Five shotgun shells disassembled of shot.
Four 1-pound cans of IMB 7828 smokeless black powder.
Cannon fuse.
Five pipe sections.
A box containing pipe sections, shot and a broken pellet pistol.
A plastic jar containing shotgun shot.
An inert hand grenade.
A cut-off section of a shotgun barrel.
Two cans of No. 11 percussion caps.
Five boxes containing 100 rounds each of 12-gauge shotgun shells, as well as three boxes containing 75 shells each, two boxes containing 25 shells each and a plastic green box with 100 rounds of 12-gauge shells.
Two ammunition pouches, along with seven 30-round banana-clip magazines.
113 rounds of 8 mm Mauser ammunition.
Several rounds of miscellaneous ammunition.
Eight knives.
One sword.
Several handwritten notes, drawings, including pictures of guns and pipe bombs (discussed further in paragraph below)
Several bags and boxes of fireworks.
Several books including the following titles: "Department of the Army Operator's Manual for AK-47;" "The Anarchist Cookbook;" "Guns, Freedom and Terrorism," "The Turner Diaries," and "Boston's Gun Bible." The book "The Anarchist Cookbook" includes instructions on how to make pipe bombs and other types of explosive devices. "The Turner Diaries" is a novel about armed revolution against the federal government.
On what Breit said to officers: A list of current and former federal officials and other political and public figures was found in his apartment. Next to each name was the word "marked." When asked what that meant, Breit said "marked to die" because they were liberal and supported anti-gun efforts or did not support the current administration.

Anyone in possession of explosives and bomb-making materials accompanied by a list of targets, that's something that authorities are going to take very seriously," he said.

Hmm notice whats missing form the AUSAs quote?

And a pretty balanced article I may add...

Of course, Im sure we will see some defenders of this nut case pop up

I'm not going to defend this guy because I don't know if he's a nutcase or not, although this bit leads me to believe he is:

But I do have a problem with all the references to the NRA and the attempt to link the NRA to things like The Turner Diaries and plots to kill people. And the implication that anyone who owns guns and has any strong beliefs about politics is more then likely a soon to be terrorist.

I'm not saying this is the case here; but couldn't the "bomb making materials" simply be reloading supplies (I say that because of the following bit from the article: "...a Loves Park gun shop where Breit claims to have purchased assault-type firearms and bomb-making materials in recent months said they barely know him." ... you don't buy "bomb making materials" from a gun shop.

And his "hit-list" could be either an outlet for his anger, just a journal (with no intention of actually killing someone) or an outline for a work of fiction (I've written similar fiction for my own amusement over the years). I'd hate to see how the media would spin it if John Ross or Matthew Bracken's homes where raided ... what with their "arsenels" (more then 1 gun) and the copies of their "elaberate plans to kill people" (their novels).

a written plan for 15 heavily armed men to kill 1,500 people at a Democratic presidential meeting.
So our "lone nut" has a plan that requires 14 other guys? Are the authorities looking for these other 14 guys?

Of course, Im sure we will see some defenders of this nut case pop up

Did this guy ever kill anyone? Did he ever shoot anyone? Did he ever threaten anyone (i.e., did he ever send a letter or call someone or tell people he was going to blow up the DNC?)? No. He has a clean record and a job.

Basically, he didn't pick someone's pocket or hurt anyone. He had a ND, a neighbor got freaked out and called the cops, and they found all this stuff and decided to make a case out of it.

People have written about making bombs and "voting from the rooftops" before. People write about raping women and lots of other distasteful things. Doesn't mean they'll ever do it, and everyone has the right to think and write what they want in private.

I've read the Turner Diaries myself. A whole lot of racist (and strangely authoritarian/neo-statist) propaganda, but it shouldn't be suspicious if people want to read it.

I think most of THR members have more than 1000 rounds of ammo. You can't buy bomb-making materials at a gun shop. And this is just another example fo the "thought police" closing in.

I'm glad this guy had his ND and was discovered at this point, and not later on. He needs a complete psych eval. Telling the cops "marked to die" pretty much sums up his mental state and IQ. He may do time, or he may be committed.

The odds of his being allowed to own guns (legally) at any time in the future are pretty slim, which is probably a good thing, in his case. Let's face it, there are nut cases out there, who should not have guns.

Sorry, but it is illegal to plot to blow people up and illegally purchase the explosives to do it. I am sure there are people out there who think that as long as you don't detonate the explosives, you can place them in public and say you are going to blow up everyone, but as long as they don't go through with it, it is their right. Give me a break. Sorry, this guy illegally purchased explosives. He is going to jail and I am not going to shed any tears. This has nothing to do with the "thought police" and everything to do with this guy making plans and purchasing the equipment necessary to kill innocent people. Sure those innocent people are anti-gun enemies of mine, but we are not at war right now. The only lawful way to fight them is vote and encourage others to do the same. Not blow them up and go on a shooting rampage.

I do like the Brady Campaign's press release. What slime. I think we should all buy at least one anti-gun book and keep it in our house. That way if they ever come to take us away, we can make sure the press catches on that we had anti-gun material in our house and that was what caused us to do whatever it was that we did that was illegal.

"I stopped paying child support because of Chuck Schumer and the Brady Campaign. I can prove it, look at my book case!"

I love the Brady Bunch's press release title: "Assault Weapon, Mass Murder Plan Discovered in Illinois". Note, that's "assault weapon" singular.

What illegally purchased explosives did he have?

All I see is black powder.

Don't get me wrong. The guy had gunpowder, sections of pipe, shot, and the Anarchist Cookbook. He may very well have been up to no good.

But is it illegal to have any or all of those things?

I don't think so.

Good point Matt. I thought he had explosives and skipped the itemized list of things they confiscated. Hey I had my DS Arms .308-caliber model SA-58 rifle, serial number DS21358 stolen a few years back. They found it!

You might think a terrorist with elaborite plans do wage war upon this fall's election might have a better arsenal storage plan,
or at least not allow the police access to his bunker without a warrent

seems like we have a lone nutter with a 10th grade education in custody.

It also seems like strident broadcast of gun control proposals can set this kind of "Walter Mitty" into action. The Bradys are coming, The Bradys are coming!

I gather he failed to read his US Army AK47 manual, where in, it covers the unloading of a chambered round.

"Terrorists" that ND themselves into custody are self censoring.

" The guy had gunpowder, sections of pipe, shot, and the Anarchist Cookbook. He may very well have been up to no good."

But then, that's the whole point, isn't it? I am a homeowner; I have pipe and pipe fittings laying around. I have dabbled in handloading and have a blackpowder revolver, so I have some powder laying around. I have the evil book by Wayne LaPierre in my library (it came unsolicited). I have enough guns and ammo to alarm any member of the press. I am not, never have been, and never will be a violent criminal.

If I were arrested on any charge, a story identical to the subject of this thread would be published about me.

Tim

Except for the cutoff guns and shotgun shells, I have a lot more "terrorist" stuff than this character.

BUT: The pipe fittings are in the workshop with the pipe-goop and it's obvious where I've done plumbing repairs. And, having dynamite (recorded sale and doubly locked per BATFE mandates), why would I need pipe fittings for a bomb? :)

The books? I still have the "Anarchist Cookbook", from whenever it was first published. It's one of some 2,000 books on my shelves. I once had the "Turner Diaries", and whatever the other book is that particular author wrote. They're not "keepers" unless one needs a reference to show that even idiots can write--but "Mein Kampf" or "Das Kapital" serve equally well. How many books does this guy have?

I'm a reloader and have been for some 54 years. Apparently, this guy isn't, so what's he gonna do with both black and smokeless powder?

And the guy comes out and sez his "marked" list means "marked for death" and I'm not supposed to think this has any sort of anti-social meaning?

My point is that the circumstances and the types of items possessed by this guy are indeed "flags" indicating some further investigation is warranted.

:), Art

His weapons collection doesn't worry me. The sections of pipes and instructions for making pipe bombs, along with the fuse concerns me a bit more, but only if how they were stored and the details about the pipe provide evidence that he was planning on making bombs with it.

The handwritten notes, drawings, and pictures of people that were marked are what scares me. That info, which isn't available to us, is what would give a jury a better idea of his intent. Without that info I don't know if he's merely foolish, or a dangerous criminal.

It's a popular hypothesis on boards like this one that the antis stage mass shootings to further their agenda. That's sort of correct. This whackjob perfectly illustrates the reality. The antis escalate the level of their propaganda, we do likewise, and the whackjob in question decides the sky is falling and that the only solution is for some people to die.
How do I know he is a whackjob? Because anybody of reasonable intelligence and even tangental contact with reality would know better than to tell the po-po that "marked" meant "marked to die."
He probably considers himself to be nothing more than a pro-2A patriot. God save me from my friends.

He also has a HAND GRENADE!!

RUN!

But it is slightly illegal to ahve without the proper paperwork.

a list of government officials and political and public figures with the word "marked" written next to them, and a written plan for 15 heavily armed men to kill 1,500 people

If true, this removes any ambiguity about his "intentions". Whether he had firearms, ammo, explosives and books in his possession should not be relevant. He probably possessed other means of killing-a car or truck, knives, heavy objects, maybe a baseball bat, etc.

The point is not to allow the gun grabbers to automatically link firearms ownership with terrorism.

What a git.

Then again, like many others, I've got powder (more'n him), and other "evil" things listed (though everything I own is legal). Won't defend this chump, but I also won't congratulate the reporter for a "balanced article" where it tries to portray everything relating to my hobby in a negative light.

Heck, if I were going to destroy things, I wouldn't try to use gunpowder and pipes when gasoline and jars are so much cheaper and more effective. "Bomb making materials" is essentially like "drug paraphenalia". Yeah, "drug paraphenalia" could include a well-used crack pipe, or it could just be tissue paper, aluminum foil, a spoon, a razor blade, a mirror and a straw - things everybody has in their home.

As an alleged terrorist who hates the government and took the trouble to write up a "hit list" he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer - as this quote from the story makes clear:
Breit gave officers written consent to search his apartment and his vehicle, which was parked outside.
His name is "Breit?" Perhaps his first name should be "NotSo."

Do you have any oven cleaner? Do you have aluminum foil? Do you have any PVC pipes? Do you have ammo? (Remember that there’s powder inside every round of ammo. The bullets from each round could be pulled and the powder accumulated into something...). Do you have gasoline? Do you have Styrofoam?

If you have most of the above items in your house, congratulations! You have bomb-making supplies!!

You can go into just about anyone’s home and find “bomb making supplies.†

This guy's biggest mistake was not running outside on his porch and saying "Did you hear that? Sounded like a gunshot. I'm calling the cops." and then going inside and reporting a gunshot outside his house.
