Newtown Township, PA - Senator Arlen Specter's decision to side with the gun lobby over the people of Pennsylvania has now had direct consequences: More crimes with military-style semiautomatic assault weapons.

One of the nation's first assault weapons crimes since the sunset of the ban on these weapons apparently occurred here late last week, at a Mobil gas station on South Sycamore Street, just sixteen days after Senator Arlen Specter and Congressional leaders helped the gun lobby kill the ban. An employee at the gas station told police the gun the robber brandished was an Uzi with a large capacity ammunition magazine. "The employee said he knew the weapon from seeing it in magazines and elsewhere before," a police detective told the Bucks County Courier Times newspaper.

The employee handed over more than $200, and the robber fled.

Specter's refusal to support renewing the Assault Weapons Ban was a key factor in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Fraternal Order of Police chapters, the state's largest local law enforcement organizations, endorsing his opponent, Representative Joe Hoeffel.

"Arlen Specter claims to be surprised that police officers are declining to support him this year, but our decision should come as no surprise," Michael Havens, of the Pittsburgh FOP, was quoted as saying about law enforcement's rejection of Senator Specter. "Over the past several years, he's made unacceptable choices that have put conservative ideology before the needs of the law enforcement community."

"Senator Specter's campaign website says the Senator 'believes that the fundamental purpose of government is to protect its citizens,' but he has now helped give criminals access to greater firepower," said Jim Brady, the former Reagan press secretary shot by a would-be assassin.

"He let the people and the police down when he sided with the extreme gun lobby and against a common sense law," Brady said. "The people of Pennsylvania need to hold him accountable."

gee, do ya think it was a real uzi or an airsoft uzi?

I'd like to see some proof that the gun in question was indeed an assault weapon and not a much less deadly submachine gun, which was not affected by the ban.:p

Senator Arlen Specter's decision to side with the gun lobby over the people of Pennsylvania

Who do you think the "gun lobby" is, you thimble-headed gherkin? Oh, and cut a senator some slack if he decides to side with the frickin' Constitution once or twice in his career, between bouts of playing Income Redistributionist and Feudal Landlord, okay?

An employee at the gas station told police the gun the robber brandished was an Uzi with a large capacity ammunition magazine. "The employee said he knew the weapon from seeing it in magazines and elsewhere before,"

Considering that I've seen people identify everything from an AB-10 to a Mossberg Persuader as "an Uzi", I'm underwhelmed by the evidence here.

At least it wasn't a .50-cal bolt-action hunting, er sniper rifle.

Many people consider any weapon that has the appearance of a submachine gun to be synonymous with "Uzi."

"Over the past several years, he's made unacceptable choices that have put conservative ideology before the needs of the law enforcement community."
Hmmmm, those that prefer security over liberty deserve neither? I would vote for anyone who puts conservative ideology before the needs of law enforcement any day. This isn't a cop bash, but the way it ought to be.

Eh, I'll go and say it was a real gun. But, I don't agree that it was an assualt weapon crime. Had you stuck any gun in the clerks face, I'm sure he would have been handing over money.

Tam brings up a good point, if it looks scary, and they dont know what it is, a lot of people assume its an UZI or a MAC. Really gets on my nerves, especially when theyre reffering to a bullpup Mini 14.

Considering the fact that "the employee said he knew the weapon from seeing it in magazines and elsewhere before," it wouldnt suprise me it was equipped with an orange tip when it was purchased or stolen.

I loved my Uzi

I had 2 large capacity magazines, It shot full auto.

Just like the one from the movie "Airheads". You know, the movie with Adam Sandler and friends taking over the radio station. While talking to the police the gun got closed in the door, the tip of it broke off and poured water every where.

(yes I am talking about a water gun) Ran off of 4 AA batteries.

"Over the past several years, he's made unacceptable choices that have put conservative ideology before the needs of the law enforcement community."

Yes, of course, the "needs of the law enforcement community" are FAR more important than trivial things like the Bill Of Rights, and liberty. Right?

And when did law enforcement become a "community" anyway? Aren't these guys and gals just working stiffs, like the rest of us? Or are they becoming something more?

This is sad if I help up the place with a Martini Henri odds are it and I would be plastered all over the news as someone with an automatic M1 Garand. If the mush minded reporter had done some homework, and didnt just take the guys word that it was an AK-47 with all the trimmings.
