Dear XX,

As I watched the presentations to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, I was constantly aware how critically, and immediately, the Justices' decision will impact gun laws that protect you and your family today, and in the future . . .

. . . from the Brady background check law and the federal machine gun ban to strong state gun laws in California, New York, Illinois, and many others. Please help us defend these laws by making as generous a contribution as you can today to the Brady Gun Law Defense Fund.

As the Court deliberates over the next few months, your support is critical. We need to be prepared for the outcome, whatever that might be. This is no time to play wait-and-see.

A lot of politicians, and many citizens, think the Second Amendment limits our ability to enact common sense gun restrictions. This position got a lot of attention in Tuesday's arguments.

However, it was clear to me from both questions and answers at the Supreme Court hearing that there is broad support from all sides for responsible regulation concerning guns. We need to stress this position to the American public before and after the decision is made in late June.

We are hopeful that the Justices' ruling will uphold the right of people in communities like the District of Columbia to enact sensible gun laws they feel are needed to protect themselves and their families.

Even if the District's ordinance is struck down, and regardless of how the Justices rule on the individual's "right" to bear arms, their questioning clearly acknowledged the importance of and the need for reasonable regulations on guns.

One thing is certain — we have the support of many Americans like you on our side. In a recent Washington Post poll, a solid majority of Americans indicated they would support a law for their communities similar to the one in question in the Supreme Court case.

While I was in the courtroom, Brady staff and activists were at the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court carrying signs and speaking to the media. They were joined and cheered on by passers-by — school children, government workers, and tourists.

We will not wait for the Justices' ruling in this case. We are, and will continue to be, on the offensive. Our voices — your voices — are making a difference!

Now is the time to contribute to the Brady Center as we get ready during the next few months for all the vital next steps that will follow the Court's historic decision.

Please give generously today.

Sincerely,

Paul Helmke, President
Brady Center and Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence

P.S. Click here to see my remarks at the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court following the oral argument. But first, please make a generous tax-deductible contribution to the Br

I sent them this:

"federal machine gun ban"

I strongly disagree with that I feel citizens like myself should be able to obtain machine guns so long as the 200.00 tax is paid and the NFA 1934 requirements are met. What do you guys think?

I am waiting for a reply too. :D

I'd like to see that.

To summarize:

"Oh crap. Please send us money. We're doomed. Please send us money. Send us money. Did I mention send us money?"

Dope

I doubt the Washington Post poll is scientifically valid. Most polls of newspapers , websites, etc, are not.

I particularly like how they put our RIGHTS in quotes.

Pay attention guys, they have no respect for the Constitution. When this goes against them, they will show it even more.

"....many citizens, think the Second Amendment limits our ability to enact common sense gun restrictions.."

All that bunch think is "common sense restriction" is a blanket prohibition. Well, not for cops and the military of couse, but they believe that even they shouldn't be armed when not on duty.

Brady types don't have any interest in "protecting" people, they want people to be defenseless, fully knowing that when seconds count the local cops are only minutes away.

In all fairness it looks a lot like a similar letter I got from the NRA...

just a flip side of the coin. other than that the wording is remarkably similar.

To quote Chief Justice John Roberts: "what is reasonable about a complete ban?"
(okay not an exact quote maybe but really close)

I'm tired of their constant nagging me for money and I don't like their scare tactics. They bombard me with scarey junk mail.

I'll contribute when I get good and ready. But times have been rough, my bird is molting, my dog barks all night, the scotch tape on my refrigerator peeled off, I have a hangnail, my car needs washing, and the cost of ammunition keeps going up. Nobody else should contribute to them either until they stop annoying me.

If Paul Helmke wants to ban guns he can do it without my help unless he apologizes nicely.

I wonder if the Brady's are going to have a Going Out of Business Sale.

I sure could use a couple of office chairs around here.

I think the Germans felt the same way after the Battle of the Bulge. The outcome is pretty much determined. It's merely the timing that's in question...

Huckster:

Moewadle:

I agree with Huckster as it just sounds like a typical letter from the NRA.

Yeah, no different at all. Maybe we should donate money to both organizations, maybe in alternating months, so as to not to take sides. I hate taking sides. Of course I also hate spending money.

Here's a thought. If we just sit on the sidelines and not give any money to either side, we can let the NRA and The Brady Campaign fight it out. Then we can go with the winner.

There are 80 million gun owners in the U.S. but only 4 million of them belong to the NRA. So 5% of American gun owners are carrying the weight of the other 95%. The 95% is pretty smart if you ask me. They don't do a damned thing to help and they get all the benefits of letting the 5% carry them.

As you two said, there's no difference between the NRA and The Brady Campaign--except that when The Brady Campaign wants money it doesn't have people saying that it's no different from the NRA. Only gun owners would say such a thing.

"As you two said, there's no difference between the NRA and The Brady Campaign"

Wait a gosh darned minute mr hairless!!!

I NEVER said there's no difference between the NRA and the Brady campaign and, quite frankly, I'm insulted.

What I noted was that their tactics are amazingly similar - even down to sentence and paragraph structure in their mailings.

And you're right. Robert just likes to put words in people's mouths in whatever negative light he can.

Let's clarify a bit.

Brady's "sky is falling" solicitation tactics are very similar to the NRA's "sky is falling" tactics. It's a valid observation. If Robert denies that, I'll go get my copy of American Rifleman, and type in the entire message from Mr. La Pierre, and bold all the similar language.

And, in defense of huckster here and anyone else who noted the similarities, I saw absolutely no advocacy of not joining or donating to the NRA. And Mr. Hairless is right. NRA membership is nowhere near where it should be. But it doesn't change the fact that Brady and the NRA use remarkably similar FUD driven marketing.

There's a reason both Brady and the NRA use the "sky is falling" verbiage. It's effective. Otherwise, they'd both be doing something else.

This would, in effect, ban all functional firearms in America.
