man what a bunch of great reply's. ill add a few too.
on $600.00 you have a vast amout of great options.
I perfer the 26 over the 19 but Im a small guy so it fits better. that said....

warranty from ruger, springfield and glock are amoung the best I have seen. none of them care if you are the first or 15th owner. I would buy any of the 3 on the used market

in .45 1911's
you can pick up a .45 mil-spec from springfiled.
.45 from rock island

dont over look the revolvers in .38 and .357
colt's, s&w, ruger
they well all serve you well too.

UPDATE..

After much debate and thought, I finally decided on a Glock 19. I spent some time trying to track down some of the other weapons mentioned (specifically the SR9C and Springfield). My brother reminded me I had already shot the Springfield months ago (I guess I was indifferent with it) so I concentrated on trying to test the SR9C. Unfortunately, of the 3 ranges I called, none had it. Thus I decided to just go with the Glock as my first gun, and do more test shooting for my future guns. I'm already looking even though I don't have my first one in my hand yet. ; )

I then had to decide where to buy it from. It was amazing how different the cost was amongst local shops. After much comparisons, I went with an online store who had a super low price. Once adding on the shipping and transfer fee (which ranged from $25-50 in my area), the final OTD cost was only $10 more than getting it via the GSSF program (where I would have to pay sales tax and the GSSF fee plus the GSSF dealer charged an extra $10 for background check. So the $425 gun cost became much much more than that.

So hopefully I will be getting it in a couple days. I'm then getting tritium sights and I should be good to go. Then a holster of course.. and tons of other accessories I'll probably end up getting!!

Thanks for everyone's feedback.

Great choice. Glocks don't work for me, but when asked I recommend the Glock 19 as the "best" first gun for most tyro's. Often all they will ever need or want.

Get all the training you can afford. Train and practice hard. For carry purposes, get a very good quality Belt and holster. Going cheap on the belt and holster will get very expensive in the long run.

And most important of all, HAVE FUN!!!

Good luck.

Fred

Well I'll add my 2 cents worth, I own and carry daily a Sig P229 in .40 I however sometimes also carry a Sig P6 which is a 9mm. they are both about the samw size and conceal well. They are also my HD and range guns as I am a firm believer practice with what you plan to carry or usse for HD. You can find both used the P6's at around 350-400 and the sig P229 in CPO (certified pre owned) for between 5 and 6. if you buy the 229 you will also have the opportunity to convert it later to 357 sig or 40 S&W which are both excellent SD rounds from all reports. Anyway good luck on whatever you choose.

Just a final followup now that I've had my Glock 19 a month or so. I've shot it a couple times (weather has made it tough to get out!) and probably put around 300 rounds through it.

So far, I love it. My brother and I went out and shot his Kahr and my Glock..he really liked the 19 as well.

I've carried it around a couple times in my jeans waistband (no round in chamber) around the house, just to get used to CCW while I shop for a holster. I don't find it too too bulky but I think if I did decide to CCW 24/7, I may opt for a subcompact in the future. But for my first gun, I think I made a good decision.

Thanks again for everyone's feedback.

I'm not a new gun owner but I am just now getting more into pistols more and I just bought a smith & wesson 9mm sigma series pistol and I like it alot so far. Just like a glock it's a meat and potatos gun and is light weight, simple to maintain and can be tweaked as needed with a little research and common sence. I do like glocks, sigs, and even like a good revolver. But the price is low, and it comes from a good brand. Tho people have their opinions either way I enjoy it. I must say the " hell yeah " feeling is a good start tho lol

lithnights,

Just saw this thread today. WOW man that was the most linear, logical approach to "buying a first gun" thread I have ever read! :)

Nice work on the G19. If a glock fits your hand and you shoot it well, the search is over.

Now this is what you do next. Get a cardboard box about 1'x1'x1' and put it in the back of your closet.

That box will be for all the holsters you buy and then discard when see the next "better" holster for your needs. :D:banghead: Seriously, go get a box.

Oh, and when you buy a safe....just get a big one from the start, because you ARE going to buy more guns, a lot more.;) (.45acp is a dream to shoot  And yeah like you said subcompacts really are nicer to CCW )

Enjoy!!
