Got me a new classic Henry lever action carbine .22. Nice wooden stock, but I didn,t like the glossy plastic like, most likely polyurethane finish on it…just lacks the warmth of the traditional oil finishes.
So I stripped it ( the first scratches of the sand paper were scary, a gasp : what the hell i,m doing??? Too late!! No way back now.)
well sanded it to a very fine grit and finished with Minwax penetrating oil, English chestnut color.
Rounded up the sharp and square top of the forend, except where it transits to the square receiver and the ring: more pleasant to the hold.
In the past I had made a movie character - Zatoichi cane sword from oak( bought a decent blade), and finished it the same way. Oak is a funny wood, porous grain, heavy.
