I have an FAL and a G3 (semi-auto clones, actually). I'd like to find a brass catcher or two that will work on them. I've seen the E&L rigid ones, but I don't think they'll work because my G3 has a scope on a claw style mount, and it looks to me like the claw mount will interfere with mounting the E&L brass catcher. Similarly, the FAL has a DSA rail-type top cover, though I don't have any optics mounted to it, yet.

Any recommendations?

How about this one?

Wow. $45? It looks to me like that brass catcher is integrated with the top cover. It says it is a brass saver "with steel top cover." I guess I would have to replace my existing top cover with that one.

Isn't there anything that would work on both rifles, especially with optics mounted? What about something like this:

It's from Fulton Armory, and is also kinda pricey at $39.95, but Fulton says in the ad that it "Works on AR-10, SR-25, HK 91 & 93, SAR, FAL, too!" From the picture, it looks like it has a wire frame and attaches via a velcro strap in front of the ejection port. Has anyone tried this one or anything like it?

This is what I was referring to. If you've already got that on your FAL, then the brass catcher itself is only $27, and can be put in and taken out by hand in half a second.
If you don't already have it on your FAL, you should. :)

Ahh ... I see. Yes, my FAL has one of those. It's a DSA SA58 with the DSA rail top cover/scope mount. I found the catcher alone on the DSA webite, and it looks like it is listed for $29.95.

That would work on my FAL. Any suggestions for my G3, which is actually a PTR-91? Again, it has the HK claw type mount and a scope, so anything that clips over the top of the receiver probably won't work.

Looks like you could make one a those dudes pretty easy...

Some velcro, bendable steel rod (coathanger would do) and a cotton bag with a drawstring.

Remove the drawstring and replace with steel rod/coathanger

Velcro the contraption to the barrel

I have the DSA railed top cover and brass catcher.

I've only tried to use the brass catcher once, and I had a "stovepipe" like malfunction within 20 rounds. I'm not sure if that was caused by the bag causing an obstruction, or by some gas related issue, because it did occur before I got my gas setting issues worked out. I guess I should give it another try, but most of what I shoot is non-reloadable surplus anyway.

I've got the DSA brass catcher that I sometimes use with my SA-58. It works pretty well, just make sure you pay attention to the clearance between it and the reciever. It needs a little stand off.
