I just saw the most unusual pistol cartridge I've ever seen.
Its basically a tiny, necked rifle cartridge and chambered in an FN pistol.
If I can believe the gun shop, the small cartridge has a velocity of around 4,000fps. The guy in the store bought one of the first ones and he said the recoil is about half of a comparably-sized 9mm. It has a ceramic slide, but is lined with metal near the breech.
Ammo cost is around $20 for 50 rounds. I'd be interested if anyone has more info on this gun.

Are brass and bullets available?
Type of priming? American priming or european?

When the first of these FNs were sent to the NYS Police labs to have the brass fingerprinted, the law enforcement folks first thought the gun and bullet was illegal. The only rounds so far imported to the U.S. are hollowpoints. The store was told that ball ammo was not licensed for import as the police and military are nervous as the ball can defeat armor and kevlar helmets. I'm interested in it as a walking gun for woodchucks and the like.

Are you sure it's not the five seven? That's what it sounds like, unless 2.7 wasn't a typo.

You got me there. I just wrote what the dealer called it. The cartridge looked like a necked-down .22 Hornet. Total cartridge length was about 2"
and looked like a very small rifle cartridge with a "soft" shoulder.
What do you think?

Thanks

The ammo was was legally imported as its hollowpoint. If you could load it with regular ball ammo, not armor piercing, how would this cartridge be more hazardous than a .223?
My question had to do with whether there is a supply of brass, bullets etc.
Does someone make a die for the cartridge and how is the round primed?
Thanks.

I also don't think that it's a ceramic slide, unless the one I handled was fake/different.

There is no supply of brass or bullets to reload it with, you're pretty much out of luck in that department. Expect to pay anywhere from $20-$35 for a box of 50 rounds. The FN Five Seven is an expensive toy, in short.

Sorry, meant to say ALLOY slide.
Isnt there a place where you can send brass and they will duplicate it?

Thanks

Probably, but the minimum order would probably be 10,000 pieces or something insane, then you would need custom made dies. Compared to that, $25 a box of ammo would be cheap.

Get into reloading and have RCBS or another Die company make you a set of dies. All they need is some once fired brass and a casting of your chamber. Most gunsmiths should be able to cast your chamber, if not get the casting stuff from Brownells. The 5.7 is basically a 30 carbine necked to 22, aka the 22 johnson spitfire IIRC.

I load for .38, 9mm, .357 and .45auto.
I also shoot a benchrest wildcat 6BR short.

Was hoping someone might know a source for bullets and brass without all the extra steps.
Right now, I modify regular 6BR brass thru a series of steps before trimmng and neck turning.
I was hoping for something a little less involving for this.

Are you certain about the necked down .30 cal and that the round takes .22 bullets?

Thanks

It does seem resonable to conclude that the 5.7x 28 is based on a 30 Carbine cartridge. I would say judging by picutes that it likely was. I cannot however find any measurements of a 5.7x28 case anywhere online to make a more scientific comparison. :(

Anybody feel like mic'n a few casings from a 5.7x28 that has one? If these can be formed of 30 Carbine cases it should be child's play for starline or someone to make new brass for it. :D

Great site, lfbmoreira! And no, I would not see a way to make the 5.7x28 out of a 30 carbine. Bummer. :(

So ya got me wondering... what can the 5.7 be derived from?

I brought up the cartridge identification page at http://ammoguide.com/ - it's a 275-round search engine that searches on case dimensions.

I searched for anything with a body width of .307 +- .01" (the 5.7's)
...a rim width of .307 +- .01" (same to exclude rimmed cases)
...and a case length GREATER than 1.1"

Other than the 5.7 itself, only 1 round showed up as a prospect...

Let's see if a picture really is worth 1K words... this one helps put things in perspective as far as the .17 libra, the .30 carb and some other rounds:
