Well, this was wet tumbled. Why would that matter?I get noticeably more brass shavings on my presses if the brass has been wet tumbled. If I just dry tumble the brass, almost no shavings.
Brass is "too clean".Well, this was wet tumbled. Why would that matter?
That was just flaring the case mouths.Seems normal to me for 200 cases if you were also crimping. I get a lot more than that crimping 200 fresh starline (also using Redding taper crimp)
Brand spanking new brass from Starline? Not completely unusual with new cases, or trimmed but not deburred/chamfered cases. As you use them over and over, that will lesson/go away.
But I deburr/chamfer all revolver brass.
New brass is more likely to shave than older brass if you don't deburr and chamfer...all the edges are sharpBrand spanking new brass from Starline?
Yes. They are consistent enough that I don't have to trim them, but I do chamfer/deburr them.Brand spanking new brass from Starline?
No, I did not. But keep in mind that this is once used brass, hence the case mouth had been flared once before using the same Redding die.If you did chamfer and deburr.....that operation would have all the brass shavings......if you didn't....expanding is where it happens (9mmepiphany's post) and not unexpected IMO. So did you?....chamfer/deburr first?
Wet tumbling is more violent on the brass than a vibratory cleaner is with the pins and cases banging against each other and it usually strips away any of the tarnish that also acts like a form of lubricant, to some degree.I get noticeably more brass shavings on my presses if the brass has been wet tumbled. If I just dry tumble the brass, almost no shavings.

It’s just fairy dust but, yes, take the die apart and look at it just before you clean it (with what? Heck that’s another thread—but I polish with Flitz). Can you take the expander out of the die and look at where the case mouth is stopping on the expander. If you have the standard expander it’s easy to see, if you have the TiN coated it might be harder to see.
Maybe post a picture so others can comment if it looks normal or not.
I have experienced new Starline Brass building up on the expander, and then galling the cases after it had built up. This could possibly cause shavings.
Doesn’t look so bad to me at all. You know the old saying—The cleaner the brass the more the galli
So, your sliding soft brass into a sharp machined holder and wondering how brass gets shaved off? You've demonstrated your lack of cleaning your equipment. Important demonstration for new reloaders out there. Clean machinery lasts longerWhen I expand (flare) the case mouth on my brass using a Redding die, I see these shavings. I guess I’ve seen them before but not as many. Is this normal?
