I am just starting to learn and reload. I want to put together about 3000 rounds of .223 and I have pretty much found all that i need. However I find new brass to be a bit expensive for the amount that i am looking to stockpile. does anyone have places that they get new brass at good prices? what about once fired military (i know about the crimp and getting it out)

I have seen great prices on LC .223 brass. I have used once fired LC for a decade at least, the stuff is great. Use same year headstamp, get the crimp out, and you will be happy.

just start picking it up at ranges. its' everywhere. contact your local range or police dept. they've usually got stuff. or try here in the classifieds, or on gunbroker.

If you want to load 3,000 rounds in new brass?

You can buy loaded ammo cheaper then you can load it.

GI Surplus once-fired brass is the only option you have if you want to save any money by reloading, or make better ammo for the same money.

BTW:
Better buy 3,100 empty GI cases, so you can use 100 of them for working up safe accurate loads, before you load 3,000 of them and have to pull all the bullets!

PS: Also better buy a Dillon primer pocket swaging tool!

You could also buy 3,000 rounds of the surplus ammo currently being offered for around .28 a round, shoot it, and reload the brass.

I buy lots of USGI brass and I never pay more than .05 per piece, sometimes as low as .035 but mostly around .04 to .045 each. Watch the FOR SALE section here and in other forums. It's out there and plentiful.

As medalguy said, $50/k is a reasoble upper limit to pay for once fired brass. These guys have a pretty good price but they are out of stock right now:

Most of my brass has been acquired locally or here on this forum. I started by buying 300 rounds of american eagle ammo, shot that, and did a moderate amount of scrounging. I now have about 4k rounds of 223 brass.

I WOULD NEVER spend one dime at Cheaper Than Dirt because they price gouge every chance they get. The first time I noticed was during the Clinton high cap magazine ban and there have been many more including primers during the Obama scare.

As for .223 brass at a fair price, check out Widener's. They have once fired .223 brass in stock and the prices look fair to me. ($65/1000)

If you want range brass of mixed origin send me a pm....I'd be happy to help a guy out.... I have been sorting a bucket of brass I scooped up at my club.....lots of .223.... No guarantees but it has had a detergent bath and is drying out right now... Could make a reasonable deal just to help with shipping and a little of my time....

I use a liquid detergent bath to absorb soluble lead compounds before I tumble or deprime. It actually comes out quite clean after just a bath....

Uh-oh, I see a recipe for potential disaster.
What you do with 3000 rounds of loaded .223 is your business, but to save lots of frustration or a possible disaster, it would be a good idea to get your feet wet in reloading by going at it slowly and in small quantities until you find a load that will be optimal for your gun. That is unless you are just loading commodities for "SHTF horse trading".

Take it from someone who has disassembled 100 rounds when he decided a particular load wasn't quite what he really wanted. 100 wasn't bad, 3000 would be.
