Brazil's personal disarmament law

It's now a possible outcome.
Gun control has, within the last century, caused the deaths of 57 million men, women, and children.

These deaths in Ottoman Turkey, USSR, Nazi Germany, China, Guatemala, Uganda, Cambodia, and Rwanda were all perpetrated by the governments of these nations after the advent of gun control. In Boznia-Herzegovenia the world sat and watched as rape was used as a weapon of war and the slaughter of thousands continued unabated after one side had been disarmed. We watched and did nothing.

The common factor to these murders has been the inception of gun control over the people prior to the commencement of the slaughter. From Ottoman Turkey to Boznia-Herzegovenia that one common thread is the catalyst to the murder of these people.

Is this to say that gun control causes genocide? No. What it does say is that gun control has been the key facilitator of every genocide of the past century.

Well said, jimpeel.

But a Brazil aficionado I know assures me that this is necessary because guns in intemperate hands are hurting tourism. We can't have that, can we?

Genocide seems far from an implausible outcome down there. And we can start bracing ourselves for a new round of refugees and cries for American military involvement.

"The genocide, if there is one, will be against the indiginous Indians in the interior, Brazilia."

--------------

I thought it was the growing urban violence that Lula wants to eliminate.

The law also provides for a national plebiscite, set for October, 2005, in which voters may choose to eliminate all exceptions.
Are these the exceptions they can vote to eliminate?
only the armed forces, police, prison guards and private security personnel can possess firearms in Brazil.
 There is NO CHANCE that the people could ever vote to disarm the police and armed forces. In government, there is no such thing as democracy.

Most people don't realize that Yugoslavia was a fairly advanced country before its slide into the abyss. All that tension was just boiling beneath the surface. When the dark stuff hit the fan the international community slapped an arms embargo on the whole region. It didn't stop the genocide, but it did drive the non-state combatants to buy their weapons from terrorists, criminals and grey market sources.

You don't care about human rights violations abroad?

With everything going on in this world, I dont see the decision of a sovereign governtment to ban weapons in THEIR country for their own reasons as something to make me lose sleep...nor do I view a weapons ban as a"human rights violation" any more than I view a weapons non ban as one....

By the way, got any weapons bans in Palestinian areas???

You can disprove that number? I can wait as long as it takes for you to disprove it -- which you can't -- so I guess the wait will be forever.

The best you can do is pound the keyboard sending facile posts into the ether. Your specious, rhetorical barbs, meant to do nothing more than irritate those who post here and entertain and sooth your own ego -- while adding nothing to the discussion -- are boorish and infantile.

By the way, It's looney not loonie. A loonie is a Canadian dollar.

Ah yes, personal attacks again, the last recourse of someone losing an argument....

If you think its the number of dead that calls your post intoi question, not worth going much further..

An argument requires the participation of two parties. You have yet to contribute with anything beyond useless barbs and humorous (to you) retorts.

When you are ready to argue, I'm game.

If you had taken the time to read past the first sentence of my post before leaping to the keyboard you might have noticed this:

We should be concerned about Brazil because massive genocide in our hemisphere would be a pretty nasty affair that could easily draw us into a very bloody conflict. Nor is the prospect of a nation in the Americas with 180 million people turning hard left something we need right now.

Trust me I read it all, my comments stand....

Yep, again dont attack the argument, attack the poster...something you seem to do all the time....

You seem to have a penchant for the exaggerated statement. I very rarely attack the poster unless provoked or they deserve it. You, Sir, both provoked me and you deserve it. In actuality you are only the second poster I have taken to task on this board or TFL.

my comments stand
Well let them stand over there because they can't stand here. Its like you have no concept of reading for comprehension -- even when the posts are repeated for your personal edification, explained in finite detail, and shoved in your face in little tiny syllables. You just make s--- up.

You try to make your words mine. You take things out of context and even when thouroughly explained you don't seem to get it. You state bulls--- things like my using comparisons I never made, that I am for laws that abridge your freedoms and way of life. You ask questions without constraint or qualification and then take the opposing position to the answer you asked for when given. When asked to clarify your position you refuse and give answers like "I already made it".

Uh-huh!

Nu-uh!

Uh-huh!

Nu-uh!

is not an argument but is of the type you posit regularly.

You're damned right you would 'cause you aren't having much luck with me. I've been toe-to-toe with Sarah -- even shook her hand being the gentleman I am. I showed her for the liar she is in front of a state senator and an anti-firearms activist who were very interested in what I had to say about her comments. She was quite uncomfortable.

You been toe-to-toe with her?

I'm moving on so take your best shot. I have no more time for your slanders and prevarications. If you actually do, on some fine occasion, post something worth responding to I will see you then. Until then, I feel we are best parted. Plus Tamara is getting antsy.

You're a good man Jim. :)

I'm concerned about it too. I don't want my kids being drafted to inteven in their civil war. That's a possibility, look at Columbia's civil war which we are intervening in now. Slippery slopes, that whole continent could errupt in the future.

Yep Im the one of the ones running around this Board screaming doom, gloom and genocide if I just dont like somethin.

O well your self respect is simply commendable. Your inability to keep from flaming demonstrates the weakness of your arguments. You cannow join two others on my ignore list

Ta ta...take your arguments and run on home then.

Wouldn't know. The Palestinians make their own law.
Oh

OK, sorry, how about in Israeli controlled Palistinian areas...Mr Muzhid Muhammed can just go buy a pistol...walk down the street with an AK with the Israeli police just watching... (hey like you would do in Nordstroms up here!)...Take a ride to Haifa with his Makarov in the glove compartment?

How is a weapons ban not a violation of human rights?

What do you think...see above..

Although you will not see this reply, others will, and will know that I am quite honored to be on that list. It will save me countless wasted keystrokes.

Thanking you profusely in absentia:
