As the title states, I have an M1A Scout that I want to shoot. It's NIB and I just want to see if anyone has thoughts on "breaking" the barrel in?

Thanks in advance!

Field strip the rifle and clean & grease it before you fire the first shot.

Yes. Definitely field strip it and thoroughly clean it first. When mine came from SAI, the gas piston was literally dripping with oil. The gas system needs to be dry.

Grease up that bolt roller (needs to be filled with grease), the op rod tab, the op rod channel in the receiver, the lugs on the bolt, and.... I know I am leaving some spots out, but I have to have my rifle in front of me to remember them all. I'm sure someone else can tell you what I missed.

As for ammo, just about anything will work just for breaking it in. You really are just concerned with determining whether the rifle has any bugs at this point. The barrels are nice, but they are not bench rest barrels that need TLC during break in. Just shoot the thing and look for anything problematic. 168 gr gives best accuracy out of a full length barrel, but I don't know about your scout.

I just started out using whatever I could find at the local sporting goods store and everything was great. I belive 150gr Winchester ballistic Silvertips were the first rounds I put through it. I found mine to be pretty well lubed and clean from springfield when I got it, but it wouldn't hurt to strip and clean it first if you want. I shot mine for a few hundred rounds before I ever cleaned it at all and it worked fine. I've got about 500 rounds through it now and i've relubed it once.
