Brenneke vs. Rem Buckhammer

Last year I bagged 3 deer using Remington Buckhammers. Those are very impressive rounds, one shot for one kill in each instance. This year I put a Shurshot stock on my 870 to cope with the severe recoil. The Shurshot is a big improvement over the old wood stock. But the Buckhammer recoil is just too much for practice. I really want to shoot more at the range to get my accuracy down for hunting season. Thus I am thinking of switching to Brenneke's and have the Classic Magnum in mind. I have heard these Brenneke slugs are devastating on deer and do not have the massive recoil of the Buckhammers. As one guy said to me, Buckhammer kill on one end and wound on the other! If you have used Brenneke to hunt deer, what results have you had? I use a rifled slug barrel with cantilever scope mount and would like to hear of your experience with Brenneke slugs.

I bought some Brenneke slugs a few years ago at a hole-in-the-wall gun shop. They were all dusty and I had never heard of them so i bought a couple boxes of 12, 16 and 20 gauge each. I have not used them on deer yet but.. I've shot a few of the 20 gauge slugs out of my single shot just to rough-test the accuracy and I was very pleased. One thing I noticed that was kind of strange.. I shot one through a 4 or 5 inch sweet gum tree one day and it exited. I found it laying on the ground. It held it's shape very well and on the back side of the slug is a round piece of cardboard with a screw through it holding it into the slug. I don't know if this is acting as a kind of gas check or what but I thought it was very strange. I kept it. If you want to see a pic I'll try and find it and snap a foto.

Not sure about that particular slug, but I am very happy with the Federal 2-3/4" saboted slugs in my Mossberg 500 with the rifled barrel. I have had two 100 yard head shots so far and they drop like a rock.

I bought several of those Brenneke KO slugs at Gander Mtn. In my Remington 870 20 inch IC with rifle sights at 50 yds, it grouped like 4 inch . This was done on sandbag rest. THe WInchester 2 3 /4 rifle slugs HP economy pack priced at $ 9 for 15 shells/box from Walmart , on the other hand, did fairly tigher group in a 3 inch circle .

Magwa, Most all slugs kick like a pissed off mule on steroids. My best advise would be to get you a good limbsaver recoil pad. It seriously reduces the "felt" recoil and will add to your range time. I personally swear by Lightfield 2 3/4 inch slugs. As far as the Brenneke go, My Mossburg 500 rifled slugger didn't like them at all. Groups were all over the place and I had to drop my scope a full 3 inches at 50 yards from the zero I had for the lightfields. Just seemed much to under powered for me. Just be ready for kick pretty much from any slug you choose. That is a really big pill you are throwing out of that gun and it is a longer stroke recoil than with a rifle so you feel it deeper. Your hard kicking rifles are a quick sharp snap.

I've killed several deer with Brenneke slugs. They are very deadly, I'm more than happy with them. As far as recoil goes, I've never shot the buckhammer slugs, but would guess the Brenneke's will kick just as hard. Slugs in general are hard kickers, no way around it. The Simms recoil pad mentioned in a previous post is worth it's weight in gold. I have one on my rifle and it has cut the felt recoil in half.

I picked up 6 boxes of Brenneke Classic Magnums today. I replaced the wood stocks on my Remington 870 with the Shurshot stocks. The recoil is manageable now, but the synthetic stocks are much lighter and had the scope bang me in the forehead a couple times with the Buckhammers. And from what I understand, Remington is discontinuing that line of sabots. They are sure killers, but kill on one end and wound on the other. I let you know how I do with the Brennekes.
